Exterior colour for terrace

Looking for ideas (and to get the confidence to do it). Our house is quite colourful and nice inside but the exterior is just, well, dull. It’s a Ldn terrace and the road is a combination of white, grey, red, brick and a mix of all, but it’s not in any way harmonious so i am not changing the vista by doing it. I need to get the drive relaid and looking better, replace the drain pipes, etc. But before I clean up the brick I’m keen to consider going a bit bolder with colour. I can’t go too bold or it’ll stand out, but it’s lacking character so needs something. Any ideas?

My mum’s neighbour painted their lovely red brick house terracotta like yours. When new people moved in they painted it cream, built a nice wall with black railings at the front and it really looks good. I think painting it white, cream or pale grey will be stylish, but below is a house in Portobello Road painted purple and I think it looks fab! A brave choice though.

If the roof in the middle was grey/black it would give a good contrast to the walls/windows and perhaps make the existing colours more striking.

What colour windows/fascias for exterior

Hi, We’re changing windows and fascias/soffets in an upcoming renovation. We’re also taking out the cement shingles on the second floor and insulating behind and replacing with horizontal cedar wood. Really liking grey windows but cannot decide what grey, anthracite or a lighter grey? Do I get matching fascias etc? Should I paint the cedar wood a colour or just stain it? Will I get longer out of it if we paint? Any advise welcome 🙏

Hi, when you say ‘clean up the brick’ do you mean remove the current painted finish or just wash it?

I touched it up (the terracotta) at the weekend but I don’t think I can clean it back to brick so paint is only option that I can see.

So are you still considering an alternative paint colour to the terracotta or just colour for the windows, trim etc?

I’d certainly paint both lower & higher wall as one colour. Trim in the alternate colour.

But I’d have a wander along the road, to see how people deal differently with both the tiled section + stucco section above and below the 1st floor windows.

Maybe worth capturing photos of the different treatments of it, irrespective of colour?

From that you can decide which approach you prefer.

See if what appeals most, is where the facade is least broken up by different planes of colour or do you prefer those houses where a variety of different tones or distinctly different colours are used?

I imagine the tiled section, might originally have matched the roof tile?

Seattle mist and natures essentials look great....If you can replace the tiles on mid roof or get them back to natural dark colour that would help too ! Can you afford to replace the front door to something more traditional ?

I’d love to replace the front but traditionally there were inset front doors (we actually have a lovely one behind that glass). I’ve scoured the streets and the only nice ones really are those without the extended doors. And with two kids in the house I couldn’t really justify losing that space (for all the coats and shoes they seem to collect!)

Ah ok....yes agree its a useful space. You may be able to move your lovely front door to the front of the house and then just have an opening between the porch and hall. You would need to plaster/decorate where you've taken door out. You'll not believe the difference it makes in getting in and out with kids and not having to go through 2 doors...(bikes/buggies etc on tow.... !!)
