Paint colour for stringers

Hi. I’m slowly restoring our 1970s Sapele wood staircase and was wondering what colour to paint the stringers. Whilst scraping away old paint on the treads I have discovered that the stringers are also Sapele wood and were painted over by previous occupants. I’ve thought about stripping the paint off but think the staircase will look too dark. Additionally, we will also have to clad, with painted plywood, the risers on the upper half of the stairs as these have been badly chipped by years of carpet grip rods and nails. I’m happy to paint the stringers and risers white but my wife thinks we should go with a really pale grey. We have already used a tester (Dulux Grey Steel 3) but it’s really pale (see photo). The next shade up may be too dark. Any advice? We don’t mind something bolder either but it must go with the Sapele wood. Thanks.

What colour is your wall going to be? You could paint the stringers and risers the same colour as the wall to get a floating effect on the treads?

For the moment it will remain white as our hallway and landing has little light. At some point we will also need to replaster it as it’s a bit uneven.

I'd go for a warm light grey picking out the colour in the stone fire surround - have a look at Little Green Paint company's Portland Stone it comes in three depths of colour and looks beautifully restful. Then dress it with natural plants!

Would suggest white! A warm white like wimbourne white. All of the most beautiful rooms in my house are painted white! Then add in some wall art and some plants.

I think Elephant's Breath may be worth testing (F&B). It has a tinge of red in it and looks really good with Dark woods. I would use the dead flat.
