Hallway too dark for black?

We are redecorating our hall and landing next week and we're painting it just like in this picture, we'd like it to be exactly like the picture, but our hallway gets quite dark, and as you can see from the pics we have wood panelling and a cupboard under the stairs and a cupboard next to the door to think about, if this was all black then it'd be too dark. Does anyone have an ideas for us on how we could make this work please? Many thanks 🥰

it Is a strong look, but as the upper walls are white, it could work. Or you could create a lighter version of it by using, say Purbeck Stone, on the woodwork or on the walls with white instead and still have the dramatic floor?

thank you all for your comments. @Julie I forgot to mention that the children's art wall will be a mirror soon now that there won't be little hand prints all over it. This may bounce some light around. I was thinking of a warm sagey green which would work well with the oak wood but I need some drama!! It's funny looking at the pictures totally gives you a different perspective of the room. I now think I need to paint the front door in a pale color... @Judy I like the shade secluded beach def dont want blue - the tester pots were nothing like the shade on the charts... @Christine def agree re pops of color - baby's feet are going into another room. @ pcmom yellow would definitely brighten it up

Maybe if you stuck to one colour scheme such as white and purple or grey and lime green, colours that compliment each other. You could have a cabinet on the larger side with some family photos or a mirror above it and maybe a single colour on the top half of the wall and a complimentary wallpaper on the bottom half. You could go for wood on the floor or a simple soft carpet but it might get muddy. You could also have a bench with storage underneath for shoes and bags, but try get a colour that matched the walls. You could also paint the banisters if they don't match the rest of the room.

Hello, looking for some advise please? We are North facing so entrance hallway is quite dark. we have black and white tiles and hope to add pannelling to hall stairs and landing in white. we're thinking of going with a warm bright colour for walls but unsure... anyone have a suggestion that would be great, appreciate your responses;)

Thanks for your reply and examples. I'll be changing the pendant light. It's not to my taste. I'm considering a beige colour on the panelling now and a off white on the walls. I'd love to change the carpet on the start to an oatmeal neutral colour but with a strong border. I'll paint the stair spindles white but not sure what to do with the banisters. I'll like a strong colour but not sure what would look best. Any thoughts?

The black is certainly a stunning look, and I agree with Sonia that the white could make it work as it helps keep a balance. Plenty of good lighting and you can get away with the dark walls, and the effect on the room is fantastic, adding great personality. I've popped a couple of links here that may help.

Thank you both, I think perhaps white skirting boards, dado and walls and black under stairs with the peachblossom staircase and white steps. Slowly figuring it all out!😆

We're changing the light and we have a radiator cover and the stair runner will be a caramel wool sisal, we just need ideas for the flooring now as it needs replacing

It looks wonderful. I did look at your post at the time but I didn’t like it at all, and that’s coming from someone who has a black/dark grey, white and pink hall landing and stairs. However, it’s stunning, much better than the pic you’ve based it on.

i actually like the colour of the flooring you have, it brings some warmth. I find Victorian style tiles quite cold, particularly with dark colour decor. We are going with a caramel colour bamboo flooring in ours in a similar colour scheme. It’s the same flooring we have in the kitchen and putting same in lounge too. It’s extremely hard wearing and not as cold under foot as tiling

Thank you, the colours I used are Farrow and Ball railings, Farrow and Ball Wimborne White on the walls, Farrow and Ball new white on the tread and Little Greene Peachblossom 3 as the feature rail. We were going to just go with railings on the skirting boards, but because our decorator painted our landing first, which is wimborne white on the walls, dado and skirting, we soon realised it would be too stark to have white walls in the hall and the darker colour brings out the peachblossom. We were thinking of a Victorian tile with some brown or other colour possibly, we don't want black and white or grey. But I agree I like the wooden floor. So now we have a carpet dilemma! I've ordered this carpet to go on the landing and as a stair runner, but now I'm not sure, it feels too light, it looks lighter in real life than in the picture. What do you think?...

I'm on the fence! It's lighter than the pics and not a grey or a caramel, I'm thinking maybe a caramel biscuity colour would look better?

What colour did you paint the spindles? Could you paint some on a piece of card and carry that with you from shop to shop? That’s what I did for the bedroom.

I like the colour but we have very similar carpet in our lounge and I hate it. It’s being ripped up in a few months. Because of the texture it went to look scruffy very quickly - lots of pulls in it and difficult to clean ☹️ Definitely wouldn’t recommend if you have pets either
