Hallways Home Decorating Design Dilemma

Stairs and hallway

I'm moving house in a few weeks and would like to revamp my new hallway. Thinking of adding panelling and new carpet to the stairs. I have a dark wood hall table. What colours do you think would work in this space? Trying to decide what type of panelling too. Any ideas welcome.

Congratulations. I like your ideas. I personally prefer lighter colours in hallways but have also seen some lovely moody dark examples too. Panelling is a great way to add a bit of character and you should have a look at cutmy.uk for simple kits with easy instructions on how to measure. A new stair runner with painted stair treads would lift your space no end. A few examples.

I think I made a mistake- I have painted the railing and trim of the stairs in brilliant white - high gloss while doors to dining/living room in eggshell off-white (color grand - almost white). A runner will go up the stairs... (the runner is off white - beige color). Is there a way or would you recommend to change the color of the stairs and trim and dado rail to same color as dining/living room doors and trim around them?

Hi, I have pine wood stairs, skirting, doors and architrave and I'm looking for some nice ideas to brighten it all up without painting the architrave , skirting and doors. That would be too much of a big job. I thought maybe cream for the walls but I'd like some bolder ideas and maybe the same cream on the instep of the stairs. Don't really know how to proceed. I'd like to show off the pine to its best. Also, it's a 3 bed bungalow so not a big mansion place, should fit the style of the house. I like a bit of black too and colour. What about pictures? Are they a bad idea? Thank you

Empty out the furniture and fixtures there, including the lamp and ceiling fixture.Use a storage bench instead for a place to sit and remove shoes. Shoes or backpacks can be dropped inside it. You can get much better lighting from a fixture that has lights to wash the ceiling and to light the floor. What is under your stairs? Do you have room to install some storage there? Pull out stair drawers might work for shoes, and you might add some pull outs under the stairs if they are suited for it. A foyer should serve to introduce you, your style and the decor to be expected in the adjoining rooms. I would key furnishings and paint to what is going on in the rooms left and right of the foyer. Everything I see hanging on the walls is hung too high. The general rule is that the center point of a single piece or a grouping should be 5' above the floor. If the first piece at the bottom of the stairwell is hung at that level, you can use painter's tape to tape the center line all the way up the stairs and arrange pictures above and below the line, with a few centered right on it for a more pleasant arrangement. Not knowing much about the rest of your home or your personal style, I might suggest you paint a soft color like Sherwin WIlliams Sea Salt.

I would be tempted to get rid of the pendant and with have a flush light or just recessed lighting.

Thanks for your reply and examples. I'll be changing the pendant light. It's not to my taste. I'm considering a beige colour on the panelling now and a off white on the walls. I'd love to change the carpet on the start to an oatmeal neutral colour but with a strong border. I'll paint the stair spindles white but not sure what to do with the banisters. I'll like a strong colour but not sure what would look best. Any thoughts?

That sounds fab Sara. I would go black on the handrail like the last pic. It looks smart I think. The very best of luck with it.
