HELP with office organisation please!!

Dear all

Our room measures 4.2m x 2.5m. Plan is to have two desks - one for me with large screens so I can work from home and standard desk for my husband for his work. Aside from this we have a lot of stuff here that needs organising and storage (craft items, electrical things like cameras, extra toiletries, extra Knick knacks) and more books. Our initial plan is to have two desks, one next to the door and one by the window as in the picture. On the long wall we wanted storage with getting two Baltimore shelves from marks and Spencer’s (both 1m wide) in addition to the ladder shelf that is present. This will take up most of the length. On the short wall at the back will be our Gods temple so is accessible to us and guests/family members.

My other idea was to use part of the room as a nursery and part as office space but that may not be a good idea.

Any thoughts on my plans above or anything else you think I can do will be very helpful! I cannot do much bespoke things here as this is not our forever home so need items we can move with in the future.

Hey Sonal,

Sounds like a classic office space with the need for filing and clever spacing so that it all works in harmony and doesn't feel cluttered! :)

As you said I think it would be better to keep this space office only as making this a multi-purpose space can make it trickier to focus on work matters. It's also lovely to be able to close the door on your work at the end of the day.

It would be great to hear more about the kind of style you'd like to achieve in here, and if you're hoping to keep any of your existing furniture?

Thanks for your message. Yes I think we will keep it only as an office space for now. I have ordered two shelving units to go on the long wall where the ladder shelf is (picture attached). That way hopefully the items in the back of the room can be stored away too. The desk will move to the wall opposite the shelves - and we can take it from there I suppose. I’d like to keep the ladder shelf and the small chest of drawers. The desk will do for the moment and we can change it depending on how our needs are later on. We initially wanted two people desks but have gone with the option of just one for now.

The back wall where all the random items are currently I would like to put our gods temple there so ideally would like it free. This will allow more room in the guest bedroom which will be next on the list to be furnished!

Do you have any ideas for this space that we could think about?

Please, please, please, don't paint any of the wood. You have a beautiful setting for mid century modern décor. I can agree with removing the carpet from the stairs, however I would just want to add a jute floor covering for the stairs after. The light fixtures should probably both be changed. You even have a lovely roomy space in your foyer. I always recommend starting with the foundation of the room, which is the floor covering. Kilim, ikat, Persian or Oriental would be my choice. I would think minimalist would be very fitting in this space.

That is true alright, though even with a patterned carpet they usually keep a mat for people to wipe their feet on by the door, or if people like to remove boots or shoes when entering ( not that common here) but great idea. The trouble with the patterned carpet was if anything fell on the floor you could hardly find it !!

I agree, I think the kitchen units are quite charming. The tiles date it, the top of the dresser and the piece over the window. Agree, would paint the ceiling a soft chalky white. I know they're becoming a little overdone but metro tiles would suit but handmade ones in a soft white unless you just remove the tiles altogether and have a splashback by the oven. Can you afford to update the floor? The dresser offers good storage space, have you considered either just removing the top half or updating the top so changing the architrave and glass panes? The fire itself looks lovely, do you need the heater in front? I also like the brick but the recesses are dating it. I definitely wouldn't paint the brick, if you were to do anything I think it would need plastering over to cover the niches unless you are able to match the brick. Do you have a better pic of the firep? If you are set on painting the kitchen units, I would look at the really dark greys and inky Blues for the base units, as I think they'd suit the style well, with brass cup handles with a very pale grey for ŵall units. Or if you want the same colour units, look at a mid tone grey.
