Different coloured stone benches – anyone done this?

Hi Houzzers,
Has anyone done different coloured stone bench tops? Eg island one colour, other benches another colour.
I am contemplating having our island beach in the white with veining stone and the other benches behind it in the dark charcoal.
This is just to save some $$. But I’d love to see other kitchens that may have done something similar to see if it looks ok.
The cost saving is $2k, which in the scheme of a house is not that much but I guess every penny counts?? Or should I just keep with the white everywhere?
My vision was to have quite a white kitchen but with dark overheads, white cabinetry under the benches.

Comments (10)Hi, I think Elephant's Breath would be stunning. I used it before on a project in a open plan living and kitchen area in similar room position and it looks great. If you use the Elephant's Breath I would keep the cabinets one colour. The actual colour looks different at certain times of the day or under natural and artificial lighting. Sometimes it is more soft grey and dark and other times it's quite bright and light. I wouldn't go any darker than that. The tone is more in warm so no blue or cool grey. I would suggest that you mix the cabinet units with calacatta marble worktop and splashback which is a white marble. Or you can go the opposite way and use black marble like nero marquinia or dark granite. Natural wood would also look great. If you want another colour option I would also consider Old White No4. Comments (22)What about 6 massive pots? Two one either side of the bay windows and one on either side of the front door. (I too have a massive gray gravel drive way. Trying to plant through the gravel brings on a whole other set of challenges. Pots are just more practical, for me anyway.) I love those trees in the lawn area.:) And the green trim. Comments (1)Hi. I would try and go for a cohesive look throughout the house so it flows. Maybe choose a few colours for the walls that work together which could be different shades of grey for example (no pun intended!) or another neutral colour. Have a look at farrow and ball for inspiration as they make suggestions for colour matches. Paint all your ceilings and woodwork throughout in the same colour. Then pick accent colours for each room. Again these could be colours that work together. Have a look at a colour wheel to see what colours work together. As your living area is open plan you definitely need the colours to work together. If you chose a grey for example you could have an accent wall in a darker shade. I hope that helps. Comments (8)Hi. Your kitchen to me looks large, certainly big enough for a table and maybe some seating (from what I can see in the pic anyway!). I personally wouldn't knock through unless rooms were small and needed space for furniture. I cook a lot and would hate the smell travelling, the noise and the mess etc. if the house has 2 living areas it's also nice for family members to have their own space at times. That's just my opinion though and what works for me and not you! ! Have you looked at pics where people have done the same thing with similar size rooms? Or is there anyone in the road with a similar house? Re paint, are you painting the units or just the walls? I would probably change the kitchen floor regardless if you knock through as its absorbing some of the light....See More

We are reasonably set on the Grande Statuario Quartz (White with veining) as the white is lovely and crisp and we love the contrast of the dark veining. The whiteness is the closest match to the white cupboards which will be underneath. Every other brand seems to clash with the crispness. The tops end up looking really warm and yellow nec to the cupboards (they are Lexicon 1/4). Neither of us want marble or speckled looking tops.
The house has a lot of contrasts, crisp white walls (Lexicon 1/4) with bluestone feature and timber floors. Dark charcoal carpets in bedrooms.
The little chip is the overheads colour. It goes really well with the veining and the dark stone. In real life to me they go well. We could look at something lighter.
The kitchen is a feature in the house. But I like the idea of the island being the hero.
One stonemason has mentioned he isn’t confident about being able to match the veining. Online it says they are book matched, so ‘should’ line up. The other stonemason hasn’t mentioned any issues with joining them. Our island is almost 3.2mt long. The slabs are 3040mm so will require a join. The carcasses are already built so cannot change the size.
I’m feeling a bit stressed about this. We are owner builders so don’t really have anyone to help us with colours etc. We’ve already been to stonemasons twice to look at various brands/colours. They’ve done 3 quotes for us. I don’t want to keep wasting their time.
I’ve posted a couple of pics of the look I’m trying to achieve with the Grande in some of them.

5 years agoQuantum Quartz do an Ultra White. Have just received the sample and it’s lovely and crisp...
It looks good next to the wall colour (also cabinet colour) but it’s on the $$$$$ range.
Stonemason is coming to the house this arvo. Will have a chat.

Looks good next to the white cabinetry. It should look seamless.
I'm a bit disappointed we can't do the veining over the island but I don't think we would be able to find a slab big enough so there's no join.
Photos of the kitchen carcasses. Cupboards under bench are lexicon 1/4. Overheads are the charcoal timber grain.
Looking at the island with window behind, it will be the dark charcoal underneath.

What did you use can I ask? I think I have finally gotten to the point of deciding on Aurea Stone. Either Spirals or Sequence and using it on all benches. The slabs are 3200mm long so I won’t need a join on the island.
Now I’m back to wondering about that back bench being a contrast. It might be too much though as our overheads are quite a dark colour.

4 years agoThis is what I’ve decided on. Aurea Stone in Spirals in a silk finish for the island and splash backs with Quantum Quartz Ultra White on the back benches. In most lights the stones match well. I will have to have a join on one back bench but this is unavoidable due to the length of the bench, I have avoided a join on the island which was my main concern.
We designed the kitchen ourselves. We’ll know for future if we ever build again!

4 years agoOur Aurea Stone went in today and I LOVE it! We contacted Caroline at Zen Stone in Melbourne. She might be able to help with suppliers.
We contacted our local supplier after we found the Aurea Stone. I put them in contact with Caroline.
