Oversized Wall Clock Placement???

We have a 1966 Colonial and the living room is long, but not that wide. I’m attaching photos of my design dilemma. I just purchased a clock and thought behind the sofa would look nice but I just hit me that the wall that the sofa is on, is not the same length as the wall the fireplace is on. My husband centered the TV over the fireplace, but then centered the sofa with the wall. That left the sofa not centered with the fireplace. Needless to say, that threw the room off. Then I moved the sofa and centered it with the fireplace, which then left extra space on the right and the clock not centered with the wall. I’m so confused. Maybe I don’t use the clock in this room. Thought about doing different mirrors all along the wall that the sofa is on. Thoughts?? I’m stuck!

Comments (127)Lots of ideas....couldn't resist adding my two cents. i copied your photos and did a little cut and paste- it's messy, but hopefully gets the main idea across. i'd put your sofa in front of the large book case, chair by the fireplace, tv on the stand on the wall opposite the fireplace - so you can either look at the fire or the tv. Someone suggested using frames of one color for your photos - an inexpensive way to do that would be to spray paint them all a dark color-black goes with everything. Since your shelves are a medium tone wood, display things that are dark or light so that they contrast against the wood. Limiting your display items pallette to a few values usually helps to unify things. (I think that's why so many people want to paint the shelves or put inserts in the back to help your nice things read more clearly...some get lost). If you want to "splurge" -you may consider having a carpenter make a few solid tall cabinet doors to provide a visual break in the shelving. I'm showing 3 doors - 1 on the right side of the fireplace and 2 on the left to leave two open vertical shelves for display on each side - with things arranged to frame the fireplace as the focal point. To add some height to your big vases, consider stacking some books beneath them. Comments (20)I agree deepen the color, don't change it and yes art art art! maybe lessen the presence of the brick with the earlier suggestion of the metal cogs its and use traditional artwork pics/nature/paintings on the painted wall. I also like the idea to paint the part of the wall that juts out in a darker shade of the same color. Now you have lots to consider and lots to dismiss as well. Comments (103)Hi snan - to address your questions: 1 - yes, the lamps work very well. With regard to the height of the larger lamps: do you know how high they would be? If the bottom of the lampshade is even with the top of the pillows that should work. If they are taller than that I think you will be okay with the smaller lamps. Look back again at some of the pictures above to see what I mean. The thing that will look odd would be if the top of the lamps were taller than your headboard. The idea is that when you are in bed reading a book that you want the light to be able to reflect down. As far as the lampshade size goes on the smaller lamps I'm thinking the shorter ones since they don't seem to drop down as far as the larger ones. 2 & 3-Definitely chair by the mirrored bedside locker with one white locker on the other side. Without question. The chair to the left of the bed gave the room life. Use the extra white one in a closet or another room. You don't want to overcrowd your room when you are going for a tranquil setting. 4-Absolutely okay to have bedside tables that don't match and look good in the room. Whether or not you like that is a personal preference though. I would only put the mirrored one next to the bed though if you have the chair next to it. It's how they play off each other that makes it work. If you don't keep the chair next to the bed then I would use both white tables beside the bed. Comments (5)Hi. I love your couch and if light is an issue, I would think about a large mirror because it'll bounce the light around the room (your little starburst one is a bit wasted over there). Mirrors don't have to be expensive - look in charity shops and second hand shops. If you go for a large canvas, make it quite colourful so the boring walls fade away. Again, you don't have to spend a fortune - there are lots of websites with affordable art. A floor lamp would be great and if you get a ceiling light, make sure it isn't so low that it blocks whatever fabulous new item you have hanging behind the couch. I'd see how it looks when you've done this before you paint or also to help choose your paint colour so it goes with mirror/art. Good luck!...See More

Center the TV over the fireplace and center the sofa on the fireplace as well as the coffee table.
Select a 30" -36" dia. enter table and 27-30" tall lamp and add a canvas over the sofa

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoMaybe instead of a side table to hide the cables and plugs, you could get a large wicker basket and put decorative throws in it (or toy storage since it looks like you have kids, but make sure the basket has a lid if you go this route).
I think the room also needs some plants to soften it up and break up the furniture and bring in more life.
I also think you need some floor length window covering as suggested above.You have some great pieces but you just need a little bit of a design nudge here and there to make this room a place you're proud of.
