Can I get rid of this water damage?

When I did up my en suite about a year ago, I installed this custom vanity unit, it's just a standard cupboard with the back cut out for the pipework. However I don't think it was ever intended for bathroom use, and over the months water, cleaning products, SOMETHING anyway !!, has ruined the top, swelling up & cracking the paint etc (hopefully you can tell from the photos) . I am considering sanding it down and repainting it (I fancy a change of colour anyway), can anyone offer advice on the best way to do this ? or any sealants or something I can use to stop this happening again ?? thanks :)

I would sand it back and re paint for sure. Remove sink from unit first so you can access all parts and offer best protection for future use. After sanding allow the unit to dry for a day or two as I suspect the wood beneath the blistering is water damaged and will need to dry out before applying new paint (you could cheat here and use a hairdryer). As for paint, you could use a sealing primer such Zinsser bullseye 123 then a top coat of your choice, but personally I think it’s the top coat that needs the most protection. So after sanding and allowing to dry I would go for any colour matt emulsion (Valspar in B&Q mix big tester pots which should be plenty) 2-3 coats. Then most importantly 2-3 coats minimum of clear varnish in whichever finish you prefer. Lightly sand and wipe with tack cloth between each coat for good quality finish. Just be aware that although any oil based product is preferred it can yellow with age which may affect your chosen colour. It’s a lot of work I know but should be worth it. Other alternative is to just sand back and re paint the top and have a piece of tempered glass cut to size. Not the cheapest option but a lot less effort. Or how about tiling the top? Anyway hope to have been of some help.

For the varnish, I also re-did my vanity and I used a clear boat varnish. It was 2 years ago and I am still very happy with the result.

i agree with most suggestions above. but dont remove your current rug because u can actually layer a faux fur rug over it. plus your rug has amazing rustic colours and u can use them as accents. maybe over time you may invest in new pillowcases/quilt covers complementing the colours of the rug..peach/mint/cream/ to name a few. may also add some mettalic cushions combo. you can always take them off if you want that summery feel in which switch to sweet pastels. a lot of pillows are important! lol! i'd get rid of the plant. the dressing table n side tables could be black (lacquer may be interesting)with gold knobs (think art deco). dressing table should be move to the side so you get more light and space near the window. maybe mirror can be placed against the window so ull also get natural light when you're admiring your reflection. ur room has an eclectic feel to it.. its great just needs some rearrangments thats all.

sorry haven't been on here much and havent had time or money to much about my room but should be getting to work in the next few weeks/month. I've added some more photos to give a better idea of the layout of the room and the dimensions. the first one is a view from the bed or the foot of the bed, so you can see the wall space isn't massive. The horrible curtains are waiting to be changed when I get all the work done! The second photo is the other wall to show where the door to the room is. Carolyn the wardrobe in the photo there is the one I'm going to put in the nook and then I was thinking of getting a carpenter to build shelving on the wall where the wardrobe currently is. Around the bed then would be more storage and shelves either side to act as bedside tables. As anyone any ideas for the type of shelving I should be looking to get built? I would be looking to hold - clothes that wouldn't be hanging like jumpers, t-shirts etc. I would definitely need an area for books/magazines, an area for toiletries and maybe then storage for items such as bed linen, blankets and random items like chargers for phones, laptops etc.

A few things I would change from experience...instead of a single and double door I would spend the extra money and put in a bifold corner section...would open up the space so much more. as for the kitchen...completely flip your design...put your breakfast bar closer to the window...make it large and multipurpose with the hob in it and then put your main band of cabinets either left, right or behind? We have recently restructured our existing cabinets to this layout and put in new countertops and it works far better than before!

I was paranoid about this happening to a cabinet I installed in the bathroom, so I painted all the exposed MDF/wood joints with water-resistant PVA glue, including where I cut into the unit for the pipes. Time will tell if it worked.
