I was thinking sash windows too and tried to mock up something for you...

Sash windows are at their best in hardwood (inmho) and need regular painting but nothing much else in the way of maintenance.

Yes they are available triple glazed.

Would the windows (and the porch) look good in a dark colour, you think?

The house on the left is probably Victorian whereas ours is more likely of Georgian era. E D, I was also wondering if the windows need to be darker to be more contemporary, but having seeing a few similar properties with darker frames, I'm not sure they suit this style of properties. But, happy to consider all recommendations.

Tbh I don't think your house is from the Georgian period.

As you said yourself it might be from 1920s - '30s (or even later possibly).

Do you actually know the build history? Are there any interior period features or clues?

E D, I think you are absolutely right having looked into it. Having checked the documents, the land was acquired in 1925. So the original house was built some time after and a side extension was built in the 80s. Not sure what style it should be, not quite Victorian, not quite 1930s either and not modern. As you can see, I need all the help I can get to make it look better! :-)

Would you consider changing the sizes and layout of the Windows?

I'm kind of thinking you could go modern since there are no specific period features to the house.

You pretty much have a blank canvas if you are tearing off the storm porch and converting the garage. Sash windows, like the ones next door, are available in low maintenance PVC, double or triple glazed and a variety of colours and finishes - see our website for the Rehau Heritage Sash Windows range. If you are installing an oak porch, perhaps some timber windows would compliment it very well? Timber will require regular maintenance though so if you want the easy life, go for aluminium frames - the lovely pale colour brickwork on your home will suit the modern grey windows so popular at the moment.

Let me photoshop Johanthan's suggestion into your home. I agree with him. You need windows that aren't too plain, nor too dark.

Here you go... Looks odd, because the bottom right window has too many panes in comparison with the top windows. Hmm...

That's brilliant, thank you everyone and especially Carolina for taking the time to do all the photoshopping. I agree, the green version seems to suit the house best. Do you think matching the window above the garage to the window that will be in the place of the garage door would balance the looks a little more? Or is having one out of the four windows slightly bigger considered acceptable?

The green would look very nice with a matching door. Matching the window sizes and placing to give symmetry would be good, but non-symmetrical designs work just as well. You could place a beautiful bay window in the garage area for instance?

It's all a little bit like 'patching up' though.

Since you've already indicated you're doing this as part of larger scale changes, perhaps you should try and think more 'out of the box'.

I wouldn't know how to help you with that but maybe you should let an architect come up with some (unexpected) ideas.

Or... ask the Houzers here to come up with a whole new front exterior... ;-)
