I have a 12'9" peaked ceiling in the kitchen and can't figure out if I want the pendants coming down to 36" above the counter. Also, thinking i should just use 2 bigger pendants than three. Thank you for your answering this question!
These fixtures came from Restoration Hardware. 36" above the countertop seems low. Also, the fixture itself will determine the mounting height....you don't want to look into an open fixture ( where you can see the bulb). Since you have a 12'9" sloped ceiling, you also need to look at proportion and scale. With a high ceiling, two fixtures may look out of proportion to the height but again, the fixture will determine the number required for the space.....please feel free to send pictures of the space if you need more info on what to put in and the height of the fixture........
Here is the kitchen we are building. The island is basically where the table is and will be 4' wide and 8' long. The peak of the ceiling is 12'9", but there will be a beam running along the peak from which to hang pendants. I'd like to use milk glass type pendant and I was thinking of using three that are each 13" wide and 14" high. The company will have to custom make them to allow for the extra height. I'm now thinking it will not look good to have such long skinny poles coming down and am not sure what to do. The kitchen is right next to an open dining room that will have an oil bronzed chandelier so I'm not eager to use a chandelier. Should I find 2 or 3 larger pendants (I don't like them too massive) and hang them how high? Or can I use the ones I've selected (Elk chadwick). You are so nice to respond to me! Thanks.
Ok...so there is never a simple answer to any question. Your ceiling height dictates that you use a larger fixture so that the proportions are correct. It looks as if the room is fairly large and long and if your island will be eight feet overall length, then three fixtures would be appropriate. The three fixtures would be mounted at 24" on center (over the island) and the 13" dimension of the fixture would not be to large for the island.
I really don't think you need a larger fixture than the one you selected but if the rod length bothers you, you may opt to look at other fixtures that are hung from cords.
The height above the island will also need to be decided by the fixture that you select, the height of the users, the quantity of the light or lumens produced by the bulbs and the style of the fixture. If it is an open fixture (you can see the bulb inside the globe), then you may want it lower so that you are not looking directly into the bulb. How tall are you ( and anyone else in the household who will be working in the space) and will it be used primarily for ambient light or is this your main source of light while working at the island? From your photo, it looks as if you have some can lights in the ceiling but I see two different size cutouts and not sure why. Also, is the sink on the island?
Again, more questions than answers here so feel free to send more info or ask away with any questions.....
Sharon, how nice of you to correspond with me! I just now noticed your response, thus the delay in thanking you. It happens that a friend of mind world a lighting market last week, saw pendants that size, and also thought that 3 of them would work fine. So now that part of the question is solved! Unfortunately, the particular pendants I chose do not have a cover for the bulb and I would like to hang them higher than 36" above the counter, so I may try to find something else with a cover. I hope I can find milk glass! Truly, I appreciate your response, as my interior decorator is Houzz and a good friend who has my same taste!
Oh I forgot to answer some of your questions! There is not a sink on the island - it will be under the three windows. There are six lights in the ceiling - the larger holes are for my husband's speakers! We have a few tall people in the family, but hanging the light higher should work for that issue. Finally, the island will be used for some meal prep and serving and eating.
I may look at your restoration light as I see it has a cover for bulbs! Thanks again.
