Need help for my front yard pathway
The knee wall at our front door is falling apart (left-bottom corner). A part of the current pathway is also on the neighbor's land, so we also want to fix that. the right side of those lined grey bricks is the true borderline.
Problem 1: The pathway will look narrower than before. How can we design it to a point that it still looks great with a narrower pathway?
Problem 2: The current design was placed in 2004, which means that it only lasts for 12 years. I'm looking for materials that are low maintenance and durable.
Any suggestions?

Comments (15)We just painted a color called "Latte" over the dark red walls in our place and we keep thinking that someone left the light on! It adds that much light to the place as the red was just sucking out any light in the place. Find a color you like more for that wall and repaint...and/or maybe add a ceramic tile backsplash? Comments (16)A niche would be a good way to add some drama without infringing on your circulation space. It doesn't have to be deep to be effective. You can do one simple vertical rectangle, and line the back with a mirror, or add some colour with paint, wallcovering or wood. It would be great if you could also add a recessed light fixture at the top. The attached images are perhaps too busy for your situation, but it gives you a good idea of what can be done. Comments (25)Wow, I didn't expect so many responses, thank you so much for your time and ideas. I do know that the art is wrong but had to put something up from our last house while we settle in. I do find the fireplace a bit un-friendly and so I would consider changing the colour of it even just the border of it like one of the photos shows. I'm not keen on the small computer cabinet or the ladder shelving I have to admit. I was thinking more of putting 3 full width cherry wood shelves, bottom one being wider and desk height, changing the light fittings to down lights and maybe having a wallpaper or painted backdrop behind the shelves?? I realise I would have to get rid of or change the wallpaper on the other wall and change the curtains too. I take your point, many of you said it, about the curtains needing to fall straight, but I will need a wider pole to do that. Comments (31)Thanks Decoenthusiaste! Yes that sofa is unavailable here and hard to find anything similar in local stores, but I may have one made up! So yes I’m using the images you post as inspiration and hope to find similar items here, I also love the grey Scandanavian sofa ideas you had earlier, and will use them as inspiration to get a lighter replacement. The blind on my window is screwed in place, but I could easily replace it with something that would let in more light, like the top down blinds (which are new to me!). I’m really glad no one has thought the absence of curtains an issue, as light is scarce here & I prefer the no curtains look. I do agree we should move the car to another part of our drive to get a nicer view out. A radiator cover that could double as a shelf would work well I think, I love the bespoke one, how cool! Also good to find out that you can get ones that allow the heat to rise. Re the music centre, I might replace with an iPod doc with speakers as Glo kindly suggested, In meantime I might cover it (and the dreaded TV!) with a piece of framed art leaning from the floor, aware that’ll be another competing focal point, but hopefully a nicer one! Thanks a lot for the tip re dimensions for a piece of art over the sofa and a coffee table, both of which are on my list to get, I would’ve had no clue re this and it’s fantastic to discover that there are certain rules which, if you apply them, can make your room work visually! 7 years agoIf there is not a real purpose for the knee wall I would remove it completely and have the landing stand alone. The attached path is Belgard Mega Arbel-the meandering path makes it feel wider than it is. Soften with low ground cover like sedum in full sun or lysimachia in shade.

7 years agoBelow is a photo of the front door. I think we will at least pull it back towards the house and have wrap-around steps, like what Breaking Ground shared. A contractor suggests us having a shorter wall to hide the box, so only leave ~30% of the length of the current wall (just a bit long enough to hide the box). We are not sure if having a shorter wall will make the whole thing looks weird or not. If the shorter wall looks ok, that will solve the 1st problem.
Any suggestions on the materials and the design?

7 years agoHere is the photo from the other side of the house. We live in Washington, DC. We get snow during winter time and hot humid weather during summer time.
Another problem I have is whatever I plant it will eventually die, even with an orchid. That's why finding a low-maintenance solution is so important.
