these bi-folds do open out completely. I'm not sure who gave you that advice, but you can have as many panels as you like, odd or even numbers. It depends sometimes on whether or not you want all the panels to slide across, or if you'd like to have one fixed as a pivot door for daily use and the others to operate as bi-folds (as is the case in this project). The door on the right is a pivot door. If you have any doubts or queries you can always contact a door supplier like 'Stegbar' for further clarification.
