How many pendant lights?

We are renovating our 1950's bungalow kitchen in a few weeks. The house is small, just under 1200sqft. We are taking out a wall to open up the living room/dining room/ kitchen area. The kitchen and dinning room will be separated by an island (about 9'2"). I had pendant lights picked out that were 8" diameter with the plan to hang 3. They are now sold it if that size, but have the 14" diameter lights in stock. Could I use the 14" lights? Would I still hang 3 or should I consider them to be "oversized" and go with 2 for a different look? I think that would still look kind of cool in our mid century modern space. But I'm unsure about how sizing/measurement convention.
