New Build....Need Lighting Help!
Hello...My husband and I are in the process of building a new home and I am having problems figuring out the lighting for the Entry, Kitchen (pendants over bar) and the nook. From the entry you can see the kitchen, living room and nook...so its all one big open space......I have 10 foot ceilings and there will be a dry stacked rock fireplace going from floor to ceiling. I will have a 9 foot bar in the kitchen and we have chosen Bianco Antico for the granite with medium to dark stain...also all wood floors.
Ok, so my question is this...My husband bought 3 Pottery Barn rustic glass bell shaped pendant lights ( the small ones) for over the bar but I have no idea how to tie other lighting in with those since it is a open floor plan with 10 foot ceilings...I suggested the Large glass bell from pottery barn to go over the nook table but he has been looking at the drum shaped lighting and likes the one from Capital lighting called "Midtown"..Will insert pictures....I have loved the process of building up until now and am a true believer that the lighting stores were created by the devil!!!!!.....Sooo Any input or ideas would be highly grateful... Comments (5)thanks for posting the photos. First, I feel like there is a mix of styles in the design that aren't really complementing each other. The waterfall walnut frame around the frig and wall oven areas is VERY modern. But the rounded front cooktop/bar, the divided light glass front cabinet doors, and molding on the upper cabinets are very traditional -- maybe even a bit 'cottage'. The looks are fighting each other IMHO. Also, I would reconsider the placement of the wall ovens -- they seem very crowded back in that corner. And the range hood going to the ceiling but the cabinets stopping short looks odd to me. Maybe a different hood with a narrower chimney would look better. And, is that the dishwasher on the island? --- Yikes -- I would want that right next to the sink (otherwise you'll be dripping water all over the floor everytime you load it)...See MoreHallway help - new interior doors
Comments (3)Have no idea why you are restricted to white doors but we live in a house where all the doors come off the hall and we put in doors with checked glass everywhere to get natural light into the hall and also break up the row of nothing but doors i have pale grey walls but I painted all those doors dark gray and hung very colorful art work down that hall it looks sort of like a gallery and not sterile at all. Comments (4)In the main I agree with Patricia. I would move the dining table to the living area, move the living area to the kids room, move the island a little more to the right so it is just a little more over than the width of the entrance walkway, at the moment it is more to the left and almost interrupts the entry flow enough to keep catching your self on the edge, with the table moved it will allow this, plus there may be enough room for more storage on the right hand wall decorative or practical and naturally shallower than standard depth, consider what it would be used for then you can make an informed decision on depth. The island sink and bin are not far from the tall unit pantry and fridge, so no I don't think they are to far away, whatever you get from these places are to be opened probably by the sink or bin, or opened to eat from the packaging. Also why would you have a log burner and an aga in the same room unless your aga is an electric one? They both give of tremendous heat, an aga is constant and unless you have planned for other oven types it will be year round so summer as well, as Patricia mentioned bare in mind how the sun transits your house, where it's position is when you will be in these areas which I'm guessing will be most of the time. I know plenty of people who gave had " improvements revamps etc" to their kitchen dining living spaces with plenty of regrets, loads of glass to bring the outside in, underfloor heating and an aga, the underfloor heating is switched off you can't zone it to where you want it, and the aga gives of to much heat with the glass combined, all the hard surfaces, no acoustics were considered by the so called "architects" sound is a problem too, something else to consider, someone else had to have some of their new kitchen change to make room for an air conditioning unit because of the heat, this is very expensive to run constantly, summers are almost unbearable, these things also affect materials being used such as leather and wood drying out and cracking/splitting. Comments (0)hi all, i'm finalising floor plans for single storey new build. We like the layout generally but there are a few niggling things that we need advice on. 1. The sliding door /patio doors are in the family room- there is no door out from kitchen. Would people recommend having this in Kitchen OR Leaving it as is in the family room. 2. The hotpress /linen store size? is it too small? and also it's position accessing through utility. would people recommend this or not? 3. The exterior look has a mono pitch roof on the kitchen diner family room- would people recommend full height in kitchen diner and then reduce for family room? or vice versa. 4. The width of the kitchen family diner is 4.8m- is this enough to allow for island or should we consider going to 5m deep? 5. In general the house is North facing, do people feel that we are maximising light through use of windows and position of living areas? I agree with Calidesign, you don't want to have the same bell light over the counter and table. The drum shade would look good with the bell shaped lights and would create some additional interest to the room.The light I inserted would also be a good option for your home.

8 years agoI was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on a foyer light fixture that would work with the drum light fixture... Also if I didn't use the Bell pendants what other ones would you put with everything?....Ugh! this is hard!...I have thought about the industrial looking pendants... any thoughts?..
