Grey window frames can we still have plantation shutters?

we want grey window frames but love plantation shutters. Will grey windows look wrong with white plantation shutters from the outside? What window dressing would work with grey window frames on contemporary building?

In our current Victorian house with white external windows we have white internal plantation shutters as seen in this photo. However we are moving into a contemporary modern house and need to replace the rotting window frames. We want dark grey window frames and I also want plantation shutters but I am concerned that white internal plantation shutters will look odd with the grey frames.do you think they will look odd? There are a lot of photos of houses with grey window frames but it looks like none of them have shutters, curtains or blinds?! What works well with grey frames in terms of window dressings?

I would also definitely go white if the windows are on the green wall. Will be much more natural to tie the accent wall with the stark wht contrasting walls. Always a very chic contemporary look. Also very relaxing as opposed to the treatments standing out when you already have your standout feature- the green accent wall. Great white bed you ordered! Then I love all the blue/green/ silver accent advice. I did a similar room in purples/greys/ whites and we used great posted prints of florals with a little oriental flair in nice big mats w frames. You could do florals or nice big botanicals in greens would be very fresh and modern!! White or silver frames or maybe even the shock of black would be cool.

Window shopping and lots of online browsing.! .haven't purchased anything yet!. Just getting house back in order after painting! I have put back the red/winey curtains that I previously had up...convinces me more to go with a neutral colour. The walls are rich Taupe but with a slight grey hue off them so I think the bottom left above actually might work. I have bedding very similar so I took them out and held up and think it would look very nice. Purple isn't a theme in my house (although I do have one bedroom painted purple/lilac) My sitting room is white red black and silver and living/kitchen room is tan and red. I want a rug that wont show up the dirt that much...I live in the country side and have lots of dirty feet coming in so I cant go for any rug that is too light in colour

What about 6 massive pots? Two one either side of the bay windows and one on either side of the front door. (I too have a massive gray gravel drive way. Trying to plant through the gravel brings on a whole other set of challenges. Pots are just more practical, for me anyway.) I love those trees in the lawn area.:) And the green trim. Also, how would that bright area around the front door look painted a shade a bit closer to the color of the brick and stone areas?

Morning You say that privacy isn't an issue so I would dress the main window and the small window on the left hand wall with roman blinds. I would mount the blinds outside of the recess t make more of a feature and not steal any of the light. Regarding the two narrow windows I would leave them undressed and get two matching vases, ornaments etc and place them on the window sill to make a feature. I think that blinds would be too fussy and would detract from the rest of the room. If you wanted privacy you could always add some frosting to the two narrow windows The furniture you've chosen is beautiful I'm sure it will look fab! Hi Lauren,

Great question - unfortunately, I can't see the image you refer to, but as you say you don't already have these windows I don't imagine it would make much difference.

With shutters, it's not so much how the window frames fit in with the colour of the shutters, but how they are configured. For example, if you have a window transom, or just the middle rail on something like a sash window, you'll want the shutters to follow this line if you choose something like tier-on-tier (where the two rows of shutters on top of each other operate separately to one another).

Louvre sizes are important too - choosing wider ones will allow more light into your home, while narrower ones will provide more privacy.

Hello! Grey window frames would look stunning on a contemporary house. However, personally,I would not choose plantation shutters; I think they suit period houses better. I would have Roman blinds made, maybe in a light grey or white linen. I am afraid your picture is not visible... So it's quite difficult to advise you! X

Thanks emmanuelle. Yes I think you are right plantation shutters may not go with a contemporary house with grey window frames... This is a shame as I find plantation shutters give great light from the inside and I love the way they look from inside and outside as they give clean lines and finish.

Back in the day we always used to specify off white or even specialist painted window surrounds but with all the moving parts white as this made them less obtrusive. By the same token I think it would look really smart to have grey surrounds, cills etc, with white moving parts (which will be concealed by the shutters anyway) and white shutters. The effect would be modern, cool and simple. If you are considering a fabric window treatment as well make sure you can move the shutters without having to take down the curtains or blinds - obvious but easily overlooked!

Hi Lauren,
Did you come up with a plantation shutter solution? We're making the same decision now. We have charcoal window frames in a modern home and wanted shutters too. Of course you have to consider how they'll look from both inside and out.
Black looks better from the outside - depending on the wall colour outside - but then you have a very contrasted shutter treatment if your walls are white inside.

There are lots of designer project homes eg Clarendon Oceanside 36 with a combo of black shutters in some rooms eg home cinema and white in others - eg bedrooms and they look great - all against black frames.

Did anyone go through with the white shutters on dark windows? I'm planning white ones on matt black framed windows in a 1905 house. It would be good to see some photos from others.

It took us ages to renovate our house and our shutters are due to be fitted any day now. I'll post photos when in. We have anthracite aluminium windows and we have gone with grey shutters... Fingers crossed they won't look awful from outside or in!!!

Lauren, windows will look fab, we are seeing more and more people choosing to go with a darker shutter to colour match to their window frames. Our customers find they stand out better against a lighter wall, and are a little more unique. Cant wait to see the pictures!

Long while since this original thread!! I’m going through same dilemma as my new house has anthracite windows & lots of people on this new build estate have put in white/cream & I don’t really like the look from outside contrasting with the grey windows So I’m going to go for mid grey I think to tone with slate on front of house - still a bit nervous, so I’d love to hear if you are still happy with your decision!

Hi I’m after some help deciding what colour blinds/shutters to choose.We have slate grey windows that are white on the inside and I don’t think white will look right on them.If I choose grey I’m afraid the house will seem dark

i am really happy with the grey shutters. The light is nice and they do not make room dark. they Look great from the inside and outside. for me it’s about matching the shutter style with the windows so no beams are in the wrong place on the window and also the colour m. I personally don’t think white shutters on dark windows work from the outside. However good luck with your decision

If you are unsure about Shutters, another product that we see a lot of people selecting when they have windows like yourself is Venetian blinds.

Like with Shutters, they come in a wide variety of dark and light colours as well as louvre sizes to allow you to control light and privacy in your home. A feature that is also incredibly popular is adding tapes to the blind; this finishing touch looks great not only inside your home but also outside for people passing by.
