Paint vs Replace Siding

Hello! This home looks like mine. I see you painted the exterior instead of replacing the siding. I thought since our wood siding was the original 1965 siding, it would have to be replaced. I don't know how to determine if the siding is worth saving, and who can give me an honest answer. I love what you did with the home pictured. I only wish you were in Maryland! Can you tell me how to determine if I can keep the siding and have it repaired and painted?

Sorry for the delay in answering. I assume your home has combed or striated cedar siding like the house referenced above, which was very popular in the 1960's. If so, your decision should be based upon the condition of the siding. While cedar is rot resistant, these shakes tend to warp, crack and at times, even disintegrate. Carpenter bees seem to have an affinity for it as well! If this is the case with a majority of your siding, you should consider having the siding replaced or covered. If, on the other hand, the siding substrate is in reasonably good shape, the few affected shakes can be replaced and the house can certainly be painted. It's important to find a professional painting contractor in your area with experience painting this type of siding, since the preparation, products used, and application process definitely affect the final product. Please keep in mind that no matter how good the contractor, the siding will never look brand new. Due to the age of the siding, many layers of paint may have built up over time. This type of siding can't be sanded, so close up you may see where areas have been scraped to remove loose paint.

Thanks for the feedback, we had something similar in mind. Would you suggest bringing the door out to the front? What about the windows either side, we would think about replacing maybe in a different colour, possibly grey, and add some cedar cladding to the house front and paint walls grey. We are also toying with the idea of bring double doors out to the front with arclight over head and then to add coving around the windows with arc that mirrors the arc light to try and soften the whole angular look to to the front. All suggestions welcome. Thanks Brian

I think the design of the exterior has real 70s integrity. A bit of paint is all you need. Replace the garage doors with floor to ceiling windows matching the aesthetic the current windows already have. You should check out Cocontest.com for architecture work, or you could try and find an interior architect (there are degree courses in interior architecture these days) I've seen loads of one plan's posts and it would definitely be worth having a chat with them. I also think that you'll get more out of the project if you can educate yourself a little on design. I do my best to do this over on www.houseplanshelper.com

Agree with Judith too, paint all one colour as back wall. I like the fireplae and wouldn't replace it. That mirror it too big and not very interesting, doesn't do anything for the wall or the fireplace. The gold I suspect clashes with the metal on the surround, bit too new and shiny. I think a great piece of artwork would really set off the fireplace and make it a gorgeous focal point. As the fireplace is very angular I suggest a more organic colourful piece to soften it up a bit. A real painting rather than a print if you can. Keep an eye out at markets, second hand stores ... or even eBay!
