Do you keep plants in the bathroom?

If you don't want to decorate your bathroom too much and you're not big on colour, plants might be the answer. You inject a bit of green instantly and some plants thrive in a humid environment!

What are your thoughts, do you rate or hate the idea? If you keep plants or flowers in the bathroom, which ones have you opted for?

I think my poor bathroom plant gets too much water - I brush my teeth (religiously) for 2 minutes every morning and tend to get bored during that time. Apart from clumsily straightening the towels with my left hand, the only other thing I can to is water the plant. Maybe the solution is to get a couple more plants and water one a day, every other day... maybe...

I am terrible at looking after plants. I don't have any plants in my bathroom as its tiny and I wouldn't want soil getting into my shower lol But I do have a nice peace lily in my living room!

I would love to have plants in my bathroom but I have no windows. Sadly no light = no life!

Mary, I am very glad to hear from you. I think of you often. It hurt me terribly when that unthoughtful person said what she said. I can only imagine how it must have hurt you. I would love to see how you have decorated for Christmas. I am almost certain there are differences between how our 2 countries do it. I think your colors are restful so I would work with those and not pop a color. Maybe some interesting artwork that had some color in it, but I think you should go for a more elegant calm look. By the way, I like the chandelier you have with the fireplace. I think I would paint the lower part of your wall the same blue as is in the top part. Then I would add some black accents in glass and lamps. Curtains that have a sheen or gold thread would be nice.

If you take the wall down between the hall and front room you wont get any more furniture into it as it will still be a corridor. I say save your money here. Personally I would put a dining table in here. The back room with the stairs will make a lovely living room. I presume the upstairs is not big enough to put the bathroom up there. In the kitchen area I would put the bathroom in the sink area and then put the kitchen at the garden end so that you end up with a lighter kitchen and a bathroom with no window. Plus this way even though your kitchen will be small now you may be able to extend it later.

I think I like the idea but the maintenance of them seems like something I'd forget about in the bathroom! Plus my bathroom is just too small - I can barely fit inside it!

I agree with Real Interiors UK. Get some 'real looking' good quality artificial plants in attractive pots. That way you'll have the benefit of organic decoration without the hassle of remembering to tend them. Spider plants are a good option. Artificial plants with 'flowers' tend to look a little fake.

thankfully i have a windowsill in my bathroom. it is the best spot for orchids when they are resting. they don't need to be watered as the steam from the shower gives them enough to drink. They aren't in their prettiest mode - all roots, some with leaves, some without even a leaf! - but it seems to be the perfect spot to recoup.

Why would a business called "Real Interiors UK" advise, suggest & promote fake, artificial plants?!
Opt for Fresh Flowers because, you can change the mood of a room with a change of an arrangement. Alternatively, a nice green, REAL, pot plant would also, create a warm atmoshere.

There is nothing wrong with good quality fake plants and they can offer a great alternative for people who aren't green fingered or bathrooms with no natural light.

I'm not a gardening company, I'm an interiors company who find practical, cost effective solutions for everyday *real* people (who don't always have the time or inclination to deal with real plants).

Tall green plants with fine leaves that let the light through look good, either fake or real. Dunelm have fake flowers that are fine and light which look good and are inexpensive. Heavy blooms don't work for me. You can see my current bathroom in profile photos I have put a tall plant to the side of my shower so light still gets through from the window yet still gives a bit of privacy.

Morning all, keeping plants in the bathroom is tricky. We would recommend artificial ones, there are some out there that look very realistic and will last for the long run.

Great article on bathroom plants...it's also worth thinking about them as a hanging plant from the ceiling or a small plant wall hanging flush against the wall, perhaps opposite end of bath from the shower? I love plants in bathrooms if they're looked after. It's a welcome sight of life in the morning :-)

I agree with soozmacrae, orchids are great in bathrooms. Orchids require humidity, don't take much space, most do not need much care and orchid flowers last a long time, perfect for bathrooms.

I love plants in bathrooms. Just adds another dimension. I have a peace lily in one ensuite, a large peace lily and an orchid in the other ensuite and a palm type plant in the main bathroom.

If you know how to care for particular plants suitable for bathrooms, there's no problem. But there are some brilliant fake ones on the market as an alternative. Can't imagine a house without plants, fake or not, even without light, some will survive.

I love a plant or two in the bathroom. In our main bathroom we have some kind of palm. In our ensuites we have peace lilies and an orchid.
