The oak staircase was cut and made by our joinery team in our workshop - the handrail is a solid piece of oak winding its way down to the basement. The oak staircase wraps its way around the living spaces in the form of oak panelling to create a ribbon of material to links the spaces together.

Re-modelling of a landmark historic building into light-filled apartments. The design opened up the space to celebrate the character of the historic building, added external terraces and significantly improved the energy performance using natural materials and innovative technology.

The main staircase was repositioned and redesigned to improve flow and to sit more comfortable with the building’s muted classical aesthetic. Similarly, new panelled and arched door and window linings were designed to accord with the original arched openings of the coach house.

A striking entryway featuring a floating oak staircase paired with bold black skirting detailing, setting a contemporary yet timeless tone. Beneath the stairs, the space is styled with black storm lanterns that nod to the contrasting skirting, alongside an oversized pot with an elegant olive tree to bring greenery and movement, softening the architectural edges. A sleek bench with a large mirror enhances functionality while adding depth and reflection, creating a balanced blend of style, comfort and sophistication.

Vivienda familiar con marcado carácter de la arquitectura tradicional Canaria, que he ha querido mantener en los elementos de fachada usando la madera de morera tradicional en las jambas, las ventanas enrasadas en el exterior de fachada, pero empleando materiales y sistemas contemporáneos como la hoja oculta de aluminio, la plegable (ambas de Cortizo) o la pérgola bioclimática de Saxun. En los interiores se recupera la escalera original y se lavan los pilares para llegar al hormigón. Se unen los espacios de planta baja para crear un recorrido entre zonas de día. Arriba se conserva el práctico espacio central, que hace de lugar de encuentro entre las habitaciones, potenciando su fuerza con la máxima apertura al balcón canario a la fachada principal.

Architecture & Interiors: Studio Esteta Photography: Sean Fennessy Located in an enviable position within arm’s reach of a beach pier, the refurbishment of Coastal Beach House references the home’s coastal context and pays homage to it’s mid-century bones. “Our client’s brief sought to rejuvenate the double storey residence, whilst maintaining the existing building footprint”, explains Sarah Cosentino, director of Studio Esteta. As the orientation of the original dwelling already maximized the coastal aspect, the client engaged Studio Esteta to tailor the spatial arrangement to better accommodate their love for entertaining with minor modifications. “In response, our design seeks to be in synergy with the mid-century character that presented, emphasizing its stylistic significance to create a light-filled, serene and relaxed interior that feels wholly connected to the adjacent bay”, Sarah explains. The client’s deep appreciation of the mid-century design aesthetic also called for original details to be preserved or used as reference points in the refurbishment. Items such as the unique wall hooks were repurposed and a light, tactile palette of natural materials was adopted. The neutral backdrop allowed space for the client’s extensive collection of art and ceramics and avoided distracting from the coastal views.

This beautiful and open American Ash stair fits perfectly into its space. The risers have been kept open and a timber balustrade lends a nice texture to the space, making the stair a sculpture in its own right. Mark Scowen
