This was a garden space that was a blank slate. All that existed before we conceptualized this garden was water loving turf. BKLD added two outdoor entertaining spaces in this small yard with a colored concrete patio and a crushed rock terrace for an informal fire feature. Umbrella stands were poured into the concrete so that outdoor umbrella's could provide shade and not blow away in this windier corridor of Petaluma. Who's ready for a beverage and some smores?

The overall look is one of refined elegance and a mature aesthetic. Yet, the most harmonious nook here is the little balconette jutting out of the house, almost as if in greeting to the sun. We enclosed this space and created a serene spot for a read, a coffee or both. An art deco chair, a side table, some indoor green and a ceiling light for when the sun fades.

Small spaces can be even harder to design for. Balance between hard and soft elements is super important and more green is better than not enough. Every plant here is in a pot or a planter that have become features themselves.

Replanting of an existing 1960s Beaumaris garden. This space receives full afternoon sun and a planting palette of sun-loving species was required. The mid-century style and landscapes of Palm Springs were used as inspiration. Colourful exotics combined with local native plants create an attractive and sustainable garden.

An entry pad of Rustic Valders limestone paving is the only outside entrance to the side courtyard. The masonry pillar reflects the nearby chimney to a tee - including Colorado flagstone small accents. An overhanging cut Eden stone cap provides coverage for an under-ledge LED light. The courtyard Colorado flagstone patio can be see in the back with Valders planking serving as mow strips between the bed and lawn.

Designer’s Notes:
Define the design style to be perceived from the street with a contemporary wood gate, pots and a crisp white wall.
