Private Gardens, Public Places
Switchback paths were created and erosion was stopped by the use of native plants to make this beautiful and textured landscape on a steep bank down to Lake Michigan.

Layers of gravel, grasses and succulents, bring added depth to a hillside landscape.

This is a small condo backyard which was originally a steep hill and was not a useable space. We terraced with stone and created 2 seating areas. The main outdoor living space now has an outdoor kitchen and stone fireplace. The garden includes succulents, seasonal color, and drought tolerant plants.

We took a very conventional hillside overlooking Folsom Lake, and turned it into something extraordinary.
Pacific Garden Design
With its classic American architecture, this Neo-Colonial residence makes a strong statement in its rural Northwest setting. Formal gardens and European-inspired details give way to natural forms and native plantings as you move away from the house, integrating the home into its environment.
Dig Your Garden Landscape Design
Napa, CA residence, adjacent to a steep rock hillside. My design solutions included a contemporary redwood horizontal fence to help screen the view of the hillside along with arbors for vines that help to break up the long narrow space. I designed a triangular-shaped pergola with decorative panels from "Parasoleil" that serves as an artful focal point while providing interesting shade patterns that casts its delightful shadow along fence and patio and bench below, changing its position as the sun moves throughout the day. The landscape design includes angular planting beds, concrete pavers surrounded by gravel and a small lower-water lawn for the family to enjoy. The photos show the just planted low-water plants, vines and olive trees and again after a couple of months. Drawings, Design and Photos © Eileen Kelly, Dig Your Garden Landscape Design

From this landing one can decide between a game of bocce ball, shooting baskets in the sports court, crafting handiworks in the studio workshop, sipping drinks while seated on a cool stone bench nestled in orange and purple flowers, dipping below to the cutting and vegetable garden to find a fresh sweet tomato, or simply disappearing up the shady birch walk amongst maples, ferns, and uncommon plant treasures.
