This award-winning home in Cannon Beach, Oregon takes advantage of excellent ocean views and southern solar exposure. The client’s goal was for a home that would last for multiple generations and capture their love of materials and forms found in nature. Designed to generate as much energy as it consumes on an annual basis, the home is pursuing the goal of being a “net-zero-energy” residence. The environmentally responsive design promotes a healthy indoor environment, saves energy with an ultra energy-efficient envelope, and utilized recycled and salvaged materials in its construction.

Stairway to heaven! In the background of the stairway is a two-story solid granite waterfall & pond adjacent to the curved wooden stair system.

A bespoke solid oak traditional design 2x¼ turn staircase with ¼ landings that include oak strings, treads, risers, newel posts, spindles and handrails. The spindles have a stop chamfered section and are traditionally connected to the handrails and strings. The entry tread has a bullnose on 1 side with a 2D riser. The gallery matches the stair design including oak apron boards, base rails and trims.

This sustainable home is not a cookie cutter home. Stone wall details work well with warm wood and walls. The curved stair case and curved stone wall details also create a visually interesting space.

The staircase from the fire pit area to the natural space below is made of locally-sourced basalt treads framed by basalt boulders and columns. The native fescue on the hillside is left unmown to form sweeping organic shapes.

This staircase is a study in rustic elegance. Golden toned white oak stairs rise in graceful curves from level to level. These treads and risers, like the floors, are hand worked and finished with layers of oil buffed to a glowing patina.
