Client is a young professional who wanted to brighten her kitchen and make unique elements that reflects her style. KTID suggested lowering the bar height counter, creating a rustic vs elegant style using reclaimed wood, glass backsplash and quartz waterfall countertop. KTID changed paint color to a darker shade of blue. The pantry was enlarged by removing the wall between the pantry and the refrigerator and putting in a pantry cabinet with roll-out shelves.

This Houston kitchen remodel and whole-house redesign was nothing less than a time machine - zooming a 40-year-old living space into 2017! "The kitchen had formica countertops, old wood cabinets, a strange layout and low ceilings," says Lisha Maxey, lead designer for Outdoor Homescapes of Houston and owner of LGH Design Services. "We basically took it down to the studs to create the new space. It even had original terrazzo tile in the foyer! Almost never see that anymore." The new look is all 2017, starting with a pure white maple wood for the new kitchen cabinetry and a 13-foot butcher block island. The china hutch, beam and columns are walnut. The small kitchen countertop (on fridge side) is Corian. The flooring is solid hickory with a natural stain. The backsplash is Moroccan blue glass. On the island, Outdoor Homescapes added a small, stainless steel prep sink and a large porcelain sink. All finishes are brushed stainless steel except for the pot filler, which is copper. "The look is very transitional, with a hearty mix of antiques the client wanted incorporated and the contemporary open concept look of today," says Lisha. "The bar stools are actually reclaimed science class stools that my client picked up at a local fair. It was an awesome find!"

This beautifully handcrafted fir kitchen was built by J.Binnette Cabinetry and Pinsonneault Builders. The frameless construction and full overlay shaker door style are made of fir with a natural finish on the kitchen and a custom paint on the island. The homeowners wish for function was solved with many great elements in the kitchen, trash pull outs, drawer organizers, ample cabinet space and working areas. Their style was transitional and clean lines which was achieved using the lovely grain of natural fir.

Gutted this kitchen/utility closets and moved the wall between the kitchen & family room 3' so as to increase the size of the kitchen and allow room for the island. The space where the utility closets were located becomes the new dining area. Installed new custom oak cabinets with lazy susan, adjustable shelving, and pullout drawers, Cambria Quartz countertops, new appliances (except refrigerator), all new electrical switches/receptacles/plates, under cabinet lighting, new recess lighting, pendant lights, ceiling fan, and dining room light, tile backsplash, scraped the ceiling, installed new hardwood flooring, baseboards, and paint.

Transforming power of BLUE . . . and well-designed island. This kitchen kept it's blend of medium stained cherry, but punched it out with "blue lagoon" island cabinetry and proves again that Corian continues to have a place in the kitchen. Juniper island tops compliment the white perimeter countertops with always pleasing integral bowls. Delicate tile mosaic pulls the blue to the windows before looking out on gorgeous back gardens.

The kitchen’s light, vertical grain, ash cabinets “float” above the pietra cardoza stone counters and new window wall. The direct connection between the cookspace and existing rear garden affords both a new-found prominence. Photography: Bruce Damonte

This kitchen remodel was designed to maintain and match the existing wood paneling that is found throughout the first floor of this home, while updating and bringing a more modern feel to the space. The stove area includes an open wall for viewing and easier transition between the kitchen and the living rooms. The doorway between the kitchen and the dining room has been moved from the back corner by the sink to an area that creates a better flow between all of the rooms - this also allowed for more cabinetry and storage to be installed. The blue flecks in the quartz counter top are beautifully accented by a strip of linear, blue glass tiles in the back splash, creating a unique look to this all-wood kitchen! Tabitha Stephens
