We love a cantilevered step and in this tiny Sevenoaks garden they help us fully utilise the space making it feel bigger. This is the smallest garden we have designed to date, we call it our 'Pocket Garden', and we are very proud of it. We have transformed this tiny garden into a modern, easy to maintain social space. The steps are cantilevering out of the deck creating a wonderful journey to the lower garden. Our clients said "We love the garden so thank you very much". This garden has zero threshold - a smooth transition from inside to out. We have linked to their new wooden floors and dark grey windows, connecting and fusing the two, using a simple repeat palette of materials, textures and colours. We have incorporated a practical lift-up top to the bench to store their garden stuff. We have also included three re-circulating water blades that cascade into a dark grey pebble mulch. The lower area has been laid with astro turf, fitted to represent a carpet rather than a lawn. The oak sleepers, painted and matching the window frame, creating robust steps to the lower area, where we suspend a cantilevered bench from the boundary wall. We use very few plants - Dicksonia, Hosta, Polystichum and Buxus - an easy palette to maintain.

If you're a fitness enthusiast, the benefits of having a garden room gym are clear. A home gym will allow you to work out around the clock in privacy, without having to wait for the equipment you need. Replace your journey to the gym with a short stroll down the garden, and cut out expensive monthly fees. This garden room has been set up as an impressive home gym, offering our customer all of these benefits. Home workouts are accompanied by gorgeous views across the garden via two sets of patio doors. The structure blends into its environment effortlessly with fibre cement cladding by James Hardie in 'Mountain Sage'. This cladding is maintenance-free and is a great way to add colour to your garden building. The design is complete with a beautiful sedum roof. Living roofs can be installed on all of our studios and are eco-friendly with the bonus of adding an extra layer on insulation.

Oversize sawn limestone paving units create two distinct seating areas, nestled amongst the naturalistic planting. Limestone gravel offers offers textural interest and lower maintenance gardening. A simple bowl introduces the reflective, calming quality of water. A unified boundary treatment of hornbeam hedge and pleached hornbeam trees give the garden improved privacy and visual harmony. Four multi-stem hornbeam trees offer sculptural form, helping to shape the space within the garden.

Customer wanted to ditch their grass yard in favor of colorful native plants that would create a charming scene for friends and neighbors alike. They dreamed of a gathering space in their front yard that looked out over their native plantings, so we added a seating area with cafe lights and raised steel planters so that the plantings could be enjoyed while seated. Black star gravel was added for furniture and plant contrast, making them pop against the home and landscaping.

Recognizing the natural constraints on a narrow, wooded site with substantial topographic variation, southern exposure, and small private framed views to Cozy Cove, the architect, landscape architect, and owners collaborated to create a design that focused on the preservation of existing vegetation and the relationship of interior and exterior spaces. This partnership formed the framework for the architecture and garden design to respond to one another. The owner’s goal for their home was to maintain a strong and vital connection to the site, creating a fusion between home and landscape with a modern edge. The landscape design emphasizes structured and formal solutions in and around the building and its social spaces, while the site’s perimeter is soft and natural. The result of these efforts is a strong and clear connection between architecture and garden, integrating a palette of both modern and natural elements. Photos by Steve Young.

Set against the superb modernist architecture of Moto Designshop, and within the existing COR-TEN steel rain troughs by Studio | Bryan Hanes, this terraced garden frames and maximizes views from the rear facade to the pond below. The garden design focused on verging wild, intermingled plant communities with the floor-to-ceiling windows of the family's living space to provide ongoing seasonal interest and visual diversity. Working closely with agronomists, aggregate substrates, calcium and humates were incorporated to ensure adequate drainage and soil health. Rapid stabilization of the very wet, narrow spaces was achieved with freely seeding Eupatorium coelestinum and plantings of stoloniferous and rhizomatous plants, such as Carex muskingumensis and Iris fulva, among cespitose clumps.
