The clients came to me with a full renovation where they were creating a large open space for the kitchen, living and dining. The main aspiration was to create a kitchen that was visually interesting, using full availability of the space, but still in keeping with the client’s own personality and flair. Their kitchen needed to be a work of art and still have a comfortable feel for family living. The most important aspect was that my clients are family orientated they spend much of their free time in their home and enjoy entertaining. So it was also important to have a place that guests can sit around to chat during food preparation and for the children to do homework. Another important aspect was creating a kitchen that is visually interesting which is achieved by the use of clean linear lines, White hi gloss surfaces with Zebrano Veneer added for interest. The kitchen was positioned with the island facing the main outdoor area to view the homes distinctive sea views but it is also perpendicular with a smaller more intimate outdoor area where the barbeques are located. It also allows the much needed natural light coming to rebound of the glass and hi-gloss surfaces, creating a sense of extra light and space. By using these aspects it has turned the space into a fully functional and practical kitchen. A good working relationship and constant communication with the client is what was needed to enable this project to be successful. Photo Credit: Kevin David

The kitchen and dining room in this 1960’s colonial were cramped and uncomfortable for any sort of large entertaining or crowd. With a small 3’ bump out along the back wall of the home, both rooms became much more spacious and useable. The kitchen addition allowed for a large center island and hearth cooking center as the focal point for the whole kitchen. While the expanded dining room, now allows room for a large holiday gathering, neighborhood card party or a group of kids after school. The custom kitchen was designed with Omega Cabinetry, leathered granite countertops around the perimeter and Ceasarstone on the island. The custom hearth hood encapsulates a 36” Thermador professional gas range top that makes cooking a joy! Alongside the 36” built-in Subzero French door refrigerator a Thermador steam/bake oven and convection oven offer the homeowner tremendous cooking and baking options. Finally, the microwave drawer in the island makes quick warm ups easy for the 3 children. Additionally, the kitchen was opened up dramatically to the home’s family room, creating an open feeling and central place for the family to gather. A canary yellow glass 'canopy' ceiling which continues down to counter level as a backsplash, acts as a bright yet intimate foil to the adjacent double-height living room. It also houses services including the extractor and perimeter lighting. The hobs are located on one side of the island unit, which provides counter seating for six. Full-height cabinets and appliances, including a walk-in larder, are discreetly located to one side. Photographer: Rachael Smith

CLIENT GOALS Nearly every room of this lovely Noe Valley home had been thoughtfully expanded and remodeled through its 120 years, short of the kitchen. Through this kitchen remodel, our clients wanted to remove the barrier between the kitchen and the family room and increase usability and storage for their growing family. DESIGN SOLUTION The kitchen design included modification to a load-bearing wall, which allowed for the seamless integration of the family room into the kitchen and the addition of seating at the peninsula. The kitchen layout changed considerably by incorporating the classic “triangle” (sink, range, and refrigerator), allowing for more efficient use of space. The unique and wonderful use of color in this kitchen makes it a classic – form, and function that will be fashionable for generations to come.
