Our new Needham clients received a full gut and renovation of their outdated kitchen. New cabinets in Frost were installed, with a beautiful Calacatta Herringbone back-splash. The beautiful blue walls tie in nicely with the grey and white tones throughout the kitchen and give it a wonderful pop of color!

We removed walls to create a great room and put in a large wooden beam. We closed off one window to install a wall of cabinets, but the remaining windows still offer backyard views. Part of the formal dining room was converted into a reading nook, and the new kitchen area was defined by adding a rebuilt tray ceiling with X beams and a stunning island top. The dining area was reinforced with a buffet/coffee bar. The new spacious living room could support an XL sectional. The existing stained trim and doors were tied in with vinyl plank flooring and complemented with neutral shades of creams and charcoals to finish the look. We also sourced all the furniture and finishes. This house lies on a mid-century modern estate in Holland Park by celebrated architects Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew. Built in 1966, the estate features red brick terraces with integrated garages and generous communal gardens. The project included a rear extension in matching brick, internal refurbishment and new landscaping. Original internal partitions were removed to create flexible open plan living spaces. A new winding stair is finished in powder coated steel and oak. This compact stair results in significant additional useable floor area on each level. The rear extension at ground floor creates a kitchen and social space, with a large frameless window allowing new views of the side garden. White oiled oak flooring provides a clean contemporary finish, while reflecting light deep into the room. Dark blue ceramic tiles in the garden draw inspiration from the original tiles at the entrance to each house. Bold colour highlights continue in the kitchen units, new stair and the geometric tiled bathroom. At first floor, a flexible space can be separated with sliding doors to create a study, play room and a formal reception room overlooking the garden. The study is located in the original shiplap timber clad bay, that cantilevers over the main entrance. The house is finished with a selection of mid-century furniture in keeping with the era. You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

When picking out kitchen units and cupboard styles for a fitted kitchen, you’ll first want to consider the more practical questions – how many units do you need? How many cupboards and drawers do you need? Do you need extra kitchen storage built into your units? It’s always best to overestimate how much kitchen storage you’ll need as we all tend to have a habit of filling up whatever current space we have to the maximum. Next you can consider kitchen cabinet style and colour. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh. You can also look at corner drawers and cupboards that open up to reveal lots of extra storage.
