This stunning modern kitchen on Sandridgebury Lane, St Albans is the perfect example of form meeting function. The client wanted an ultra-modern kitchen that would be able to accommodate their large family and their love of entertaining. They wanted an almost commercial and industrial feel to the space, and they definitely achieved that goal with this striking scheme. The sleek lines and monochromatic palette create a chic and elegant aesthetic, while the brushed steel surfaces and high-end appliances give the space a contemporary feel. We used a combination of brushed steel reproduction and lacquered laminate for the cabinets and a Dekton Domoos in matt graphite. The luxury appliances are from Siemens, Blanco, and Quooker, and they were chosen for their quality and ability to meet a busy family's demands. This kitchen is truly a work of art and is sure to be the centre of many happy memories for years to come.

Set within an airy contemporary extension to a lovely Georgian home, the Siatama Kitchen is our most ambitious project to date. The client, a master cook who taught English in Siatama, Japan, wanted a space that spliced together her love of Japanese detailing with a sophisticated Scandinavian approach to wood. At the centre of the deisgn is a large island, made in solid british elm, and topped with a set of lined drawers for utensils, cutlery and chefs knifes. The 4-post legs of the island conform to the 寸 (pronounced ‘sun’), an ancient Japanese measurement equal to 3cm. An undulating chevron detail articulates the lower drawers in the island, and an open-framed end, with wood worktop, provides a space for casual dining and homework. A full height pantry, with sliding doors with diagonally-wired glass, and an integrated american-style fridge freezer, give acres of storage space and allow for clutter to be shut away. A plant shelf above the pantry brings the space to life, making the most of the high ceilings and light in this lovely room.

Full refurbishment and interior design of a three bedroom warehouse conversion on a cobbled street in one of East London's coolest neighbourhoods. The apartment was designed with entertaining in mind, keeping the decor chic yet eclectic to convey a sense of sophisticated fun. The sleek U-shaped matt grey kitchen with bespoke open-shelving opening onto the jungle inspired lounge coupled with the pale grey laminate flooring create a feeling of vast bright space. The statement pieces play a vital role in elevating the space as a whole from the limited edition disco-ball trolley bar and super-luxe Eichholtz palm tree floor lamp to the brass egg chair imported from Amsterdam nestled in the corner of the lounge.

This luxury bespoke kitchen is situated in a stunning family home in the leafy green London suburb of Hadley Wood. The kitchen is from the Nickleby range, a design that is synonymous with classic contemporary living. The kitchen cabinetry is handmade by Humphrey Munson’s expert team of cabinetmakers using traditional joinery techniques. The kitchen itself is flooded with natural light that pours in through the windows and bi-folding doors which gives the space a super clean, fresh and modern feel. The large kitchen island takes centre stage and is cleverly divided into distinctive areas using a mix of silestone worktop and smoked oak round worktop. The kitchen island is painted and because the client really loved the Spenlow handles we used those for this Nickleby kitchen. The double Bakersfield smart divide sink by Kohler has the Perrin & Rowe tap and a Quooker boiling hot water tap for maximum convenience. The painted cupboards are complimented by smoked oak feature accents throughout the kitchen including the two bi-folding cupboard doors either side of the range cooker, the round bar seating at the island as well as the cupboards for the integrated column refrigerator, freezer and curved pantry. The versatility of this kitchen lends itself perfectly to modern family living. There is seating at the kitchen island – a perfect spot for a mid-week meal or catching up with a friend over coffee. The kitchen is designed in an open plan format and leads into the dining area which is housed in a light and airy conservatory garden room.

You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

When picking out kitchen units and cupboard styles for a fitted kitchen, you’ll first want to consider the more practical questions – how many units do you need? It’s always best to overestimate how much kitchen storage you’ll need as we all tend to have a habit of filling up whatever current space we have to the maximum. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh. Of course, grey kitchens are the neutral colour choice du jour and can be paired with pale and rich shades alike if you want your fitted kitchen cupboards to contrast with your worktop, splashback, floor, or all of the above. Exposed shelving and storage is also popular for eclectic, Scandi and industrial-inspired looks, so you could opt for glass-fronted cabinets or no wall-mounted cabinets at all. Remember that this will require more restraint in what you can store and more effort in keeping it looking presentable compared to what is stored away hastily behind cupboard doors. Whilst a large kitchen pantry is the dream of most homeowners, it can’t always be a reality. However, there are now lots of pull out compartments and drawers with trays and shelving that can act as mini kitchen pantries, and you can install handy cupboard organisers that fit onto the inside of the door to make the most of your cupboard space. You can also look at corner drawers and cupboards that open up to reveal lots of extra storage. Rails or small shelves along your kitchen walls or splashback can help with hanging utensils or pans, or storing small items like herbs and spices in an usually empty space. Kitchen ideas and accessories such as baskets, trolleys and storage jars are both aesthetically pleasing and practical as they give you extra storage space. Kitchen appliances like a fridge or dishwasher can be tucked away in built-in units in fitted kitchens so they blend into your layout and don’t make the space look crowded.
