A small front yard with interesting elevation changes created by terracing. Terracing and elevation changes make small yards appear to have more depth. The color of the weeping Cercis tree accents the shutters color. and the yellow green and orange plants accent the Cercis color. Using complementary colors makes both color look more vibrant. To further lighten the look, there are extra-large polished concrete steppers which flow from the front fence to the porch. These give the appearance of floating over the garden and tie in with the Corten steel raised planters. When the sun sets, strip lighting under the floating steppers and garden uplights work together to bring the front garden to life in a whole new way.

Drought tolerant and deer resistant plants are featured in this front yard makeover. Herbs, including lavender, catmint, sage, oregano and thyme and ornamental grasses add color and texture to this Mediterranean style home sitting on a large bedrock outcropping. Low maintenance ground covers replace lawn.

The homeowners enjoy a wonderful view from the front porch. The front yard is heavily shaded by large trees, eliminating turf as an option. Instead, we situated a pergola in the center of the space, with a flagstone path providing easy access. This encourages movement through the space and helps to bring the landscape into scale with the property.

Granite shingle path warms up nicely. Divided with low Sedums to create rhythmic divisions.
The border planting is mixed evergreens and perennials with bulbs for extended colour throughout the year.
Evergreen Trachelospermum will cover the fence and the wired apertures and will be kept clipped. Interspersed with Rosa Maigold and Clematis texensis to link with the purple and orange colour scheme - cat included.

A Seattle couple needed to take advantage of our amazing summer weather and asked for a way to watch movies outside. We were up to the challenge, designing a custom concrete bench that by day serves as built-in seating and transforms at night into a perfect spot to catch a flick on the fly! Other touches include modern planting and steel planters to match the contemporary feel of the home.
