This Loft Conversion landing has been made into a happy space by simply painting the doors and architrave in India Yellow by Farrow & Ball, which really stands out against the white walls and floor. Then we have the gorgeous grey of London Roof by Designers Guild painted up to dado height as you come up the winding stairs, a practical solution for mucky finger prints as this floor houses the bedrooms of 2 teenagers. The scheme is brought to life further by black and white floor tiles as you enter the bathroom and a stripy laundry basket from Cox & Cox. Then last but not least, there is a gallery wall of artwork from the children, created over the years and treasured in simple black or white picture frames. It brings us joy every day (although don't look behind these beautiful bedroom doors, the bedrooms resemble a bomb site).

When you start with the basic, builder-grade quality, it's easy to find room for improvement. Contrast that with fine stainless steel hardware and expert craftsmanship, and it's difficult to find a better before-and-after foyer stairway design. Whether you're restoring a home or creating a masterpiece, metal railing with a variety of options and finishes is a great place to start. Make sure to factor in the whole scope of the project - new steps, fresh paint, and light fixtures.

Internal glazed box leads to staircase to roof terrace. RRA was commissioned to revisit this 1970’s mansion, set within one of Cheltenham’s premiere addresses. The project involved working with our client to open up the space, bringing light into the interior, and to upgrade fittings and finishes throughout including an illuminated stainless-steel and glass helical staircase, a new double-height hallway, an elevated terrace to view stunning landscaped gardens and a superb inside-outside space created via a substantial 8m long sliding glazed screen. This tired 1970’s mansion has been transformed into a stunning contemporary home.

Made of all local woods, this contemporary open rise stairway was hand crafted at our shop using traditional dovetail and mortise and tenon joinery. The banister features three walnut keys and a full length compounding curved handrail with a hand carved profile. Assembled on site in two pieces. Harp like in character & shape, this musical inspired staircase strums a tune of nature in this modern home.

A beautiful stairway! American White Ash treads float up the wall with warm white LED lighting strips fitted to the base of each tread for sculptural work of art. Frameless glass balustrade with stainless steel fixings and a matching American Ash handrail complete the look. Photography: Kat Grooby
