Kitchen rework to create living space

We need help re working our kitchen to create a living space. Our idea is to change the island to create seating for four people to eat. This would allow us to lose the dining table to create a living area. We are able to move the door but would like to keep the kitchen units on the wall that they currently are. It would be great to get thoughts on whether you think this would work or if you have any other thoughts.

Our kitchen is on the ground floor of our 3 floor flat and whilst we have a big living space above, we find that the kitchen is used as a living space too.

I would extend the worktop from the sink area to create a U shape with maybe a 'lollipop' end for seating. You may need to move the sink over to the left a little to make enough space and this will also give you a good deal of worktop prep area.

Personally I'd just add a banquette seat and cushions. You get a comfier seat plus keep the prep and stool space with room for guests

I agree with everything said so far. Would suggest you get built in book shelvers on both sides of fireplace, lift tv into a slot it fits perfectly into (make sure you have power on both sides). Then it will disappear more rather than fight with fireplace as focal point. I am always disappointed with mirrors over fireplaces, they become dark, are to high to reflect much. Plus then you have three rectangles fighting for center stage. I'd say very colorful artwork instead. Wonder if you can reorient tv where the big chairs are so both tv and fireplace are addressed? Color, maybe you should decide on furniture first?

I assume you mean a wood burning stove as fireplace as opposed to a wood burning stove as cooking stove? Takes all kinds to make a world and it's not the first time I've seen the idea. It depends on the strength of the fan. Pulling too many cubic feet per minute may suck smoke and carbon monoxide into the living area from the stove. Make up air ventilation, outside air, is required for fans over a certain CFM. I can't quote code on this one, but the make up air prevents negative pressure within the house. A sealed combustion firebox is probably OK, the air for combustion on such a unit would also come form outside. The EPA rated wood burning fireplace from Fireplace Xtrodinaire is an example. Hope this helps...a call to your local building department may answer your question better.

Hi amfork, I went ahead & put the hob on my island & am delighted I did. I find it really is so much nicer looking out at the kids/my husband & being able to chat to them while I prepare meals as opposed to facing the wall with my back turned on everyone. I put a 4 ring induction hob on the island & put a 5 ring gas hob on counter facing wall. I did this as I have a large extended family & we frequently have get togethers. It’s great for catering for big events. However, I use the 4 ring induction hob on a daily basis. Hope this helps! Best of luck with your project, Claire

Hi minnie101, Thanks so much for your detailed reply. Great to know what colour that grey is. It may be a little dark with our floor. We will definitely update the handles - I hate the current ones. We'll probably go with wood to keep within budget. Your non-tiles pic is lovely. We'll probably keep some tiles and try to keep the kitchen a little more modern than country kitchen, which might be a challenge with wood. The room faces south. I like your idea of dividing it with paint. We probably will go with white in the kitchen and then 1/2 slightly darker tones in the tv-couch area. The 'other' entrance into the dining area is narrowed by a non-structural wall, so we should remove this to open it properly or like you say, close it off. Maybe not close it off entirely as we'd lose a lot of light, but maybe put in a counter or breakfast bar if space allowed. I love your pendant light suggestions over the dining table. Details like this and a rug in the couch area will really help divide the room as at the moment it is one big cavernous space. I really can't decide yet what way the couches should face - into a tv in the corner, or out into the room like you suggest. We'll have to draw out some chalk outlines on the floor and see how much space there actually is. Colour-wise we like the idea of keeping walls and cabinets quite stark, the wood counter will add a bit of warmth, and then adding colour with couches, rugs and possibly dining chairs. I've attached a couple of pieces of furniture I like. Some may not work, but we'll figure it out.

No need to extend your worktop. Just remove the island. Buy an extendable table (ikea besta for example). And have space for a sofa/whatever seating you'd like.
