raised flower beds

so I'm just deciding on the layout of my new garden in sunny Ireland.
I wanted raised beds either side of my front door.
Problem!! I don't know how much space to leave between the wall of the house and the start of the flower bed?? do I need to leave a gully of some kind? and last thing...will the rain pour down from the roof and ruin it anyway. any help would be great or websites that specialise in this thanks!!
