The countertop is a natural stone by the name of Super White. This particular material was brushed so all the darker veins protrude passed the surface. very interesting look. Some say Super White is a marble and some say it's a quartzite. We think its a quartzite because it much denser than your normal marble.
I am fairly certain that Super White is classified geologically as a Dolomite. Dolomite has 50% less calcium carbonate than marble, which means it doesn't react the same to acid like marble which is 99% calcium carbonate. (acids and calcium are enemies) Also, Dolomite is a 3.5 - 4.0 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Marble is a 3.0.
The most important thing you should know about Super White is that it is NOT Granite or Quartzite. It is a very beautiful, practical and functional countertop, but it will not perform the same as Granite or Quartzite. (Granite and Quartzite are a 5.0 - 7.0 on the Mohs scale - and they don't contain calcium carbonate, so they don't react to acids)
I think this is a beautiful material and we often recommend Super White as a slightly more practical alternative to marble. We refer to it as a "hard marble".
Understanding that every person and every environment is different, it's really a matter of education and managing expectations to help someone make the best choice.
Avanti Marble and Granite--why do you say that it is NOT a granite or a quartzite? Everything I've read so far says it is a quartzite. Also, when they "grade" the materials, does Super White fit into the mid grade or a higher grade (and therefore more costly)? Thanks in advance!
