Sliding door/ divider ideas

Hi. I am looking for some ideas for a sliding door or divider on this wall. It will separate the open plan kitchen/ dining room from a large lounge room. I want to be able to open up this space and close it as needed. I would like something that slides onto the wall- a door/ art panel/ ??? The kitchen is very modern and we're not sure if we will keep the dining chairs as they seem too formal. Also looking for ceiling light. Open to all ideas!

Comments (7)I agree with maikola, turn under the stairs into storage. Maybe combine with a little desk for when the kids are older. I'd swap your dining and living area around. Have the tv on the long left wall with a small sofa a couple of feet in front of the doors and one opposite the tv. It does look as if a 5ft table would fit in the kitchen though? If you don't want to fill too much of the kitchen space consider a bench one side for you to use with chairs for the kids on the other. Large tiles do make a room feel bigger as the pattern is less busy however I've seen the hex tiles in small bathrooms and they seem to work as your inspiration pic shows. I would probably lose the flowers though if I'm honest. Do you want the window for light or ventilation? Could a decent extractor be sufficient? I'm thinking that back ŵall could look quite busy. Is there any opportunity to change the layout? Moving soil pipes can be a little costly but could the sink be moved although ideally the loo would be hidden round the corner. You can pick up some great looking vintage or vintage style taps on ebay although unsure if the quality of the repro ones, If the layout can't be changed maybe have a corner loo and ŵall hung trough sink and put some storage in on the rhs as you come through the door depending on how you plan for the shower to open...See Moreinternal sliding doors

- 12 years agolast modified: 12 years agoBernice, I'm with you. Barn doors (the ones that look like barn doors) are too rustic for your space.
I like the french and pocket best but it sounds like you want to slide it.
So if you're going to slide it, I'd say try to make it a piece of art.
Just brainstorming here: Insert two big stain glass panels (may not look great when door open due to lack of light); insert or have painting on door; hang huge tapistery on door such that when the door is open it's like a piece of tapistery art in the middle of the that wall of the room; if you're really good at crafts maybe even well done wall paper in the panels of door.

- 12 years agoMariaed- I really like the door idea with the wallpaper and actually did something similar with my wardrobes when changing my bedroom a while back - photo attached. I do like the idea of it being colourful or like a piece of art when the door is open - which I reckon it will be alot!

12 years agoWith a sliding door, you can have each side different to match the style of the room it faces.
Here are some ideas that, believe it or not, are done with sharpies on flat surfaces. I can envision a "fireplace" on the lounge side. On the dining room side, you could do the "double door" look, by putting half on the door, and half on the wall next to the door. So when the door is closed, it looks like a pair of doors, but when the door is slid open it looks like only one door (but it's the wall!)
I added the 3rd picture just because I think it's so cool. I believe the only "real" thing in the room is the glass table/desk, and the filing cabinet.
