Carpet upstairs?

Hi, we're buying a converted bungalow. The bedroom in the photo attached, would be my daughter's bedroom. The carpet in this room is blue (I don't like it at all) and the carpet in the rest of the 1st floor is light grey.
I don't like carpets because they accumulate dust, but I don't know if I should replace the blue carpet with a light grey one, similar to the one in the rest of the 1st floor or remove all the carpet in the whole floor and stairs and add laminated flooring or engineered hardwood flooring (same as downstairs hallway). My concerns:
1. Would the house become colder? Would it make a big difference?
2. Would it be less unlikely to resell at some point as carpets seem to be much more popular here in the UK?
3. How much could it cost me to replace the carpet with something else?
The whole 1st floor is 57 square metres.
Any help/advice would be much appreciated.

This is a really common dilemma, so you’re definitely not overthinking it.

If you don’t like carpet, I wouldn’t replace like for like just because it’s there now. You’ll be living with it every day.

On your concerns:
1. Will it feel colder?
  Yes, slightly. Carpet + underlay does insulate more. But it’s not drastic, especially upstairs. You can easily soften it with rugs where needed, and engineered wood in particular still feels warmer than tile.
2. Resale value
  In the UK, carpet is still common upstairs, but buyers aren’t put off by good quality flooring. A nice engineered wood or even a good laminate/LVT can feel more premium and low maintenance. Cheap or worn carpet is more of a turn-off than hard flooring.
3. Cost (based on your 57m²):
Laminate: £6.99–£23.99/m² → ~£400–£1,350 materials

LVT: £11.99–£25.99/m² → ~£680–£1,480 materials

Engineered wood: £25.99–£102.99/m² → ~£1,480–£5,800+ materials

Then add underlay, trims and fitting if you’re not DIYing.

My honest take:
If you like the look downstairs, continuing that upstairs (or something very similar) will make the whole home feel more cohesive and modern. You can always add a soft rug in your daughter’s room for comfort.

If budget is tighter, laminate or LVT are both great options. Laminate is the most cost-effective, but LVT is quieter, more forgiving, and better long-term.

Carpet only really wins on softness and warmth, so it comes down to what matters more to you day-to-day.

When I though you meant the carpet was for ground floor I would say no to runner, and leave stairs dark with white risers...but since the carpet is only upstairs on landing I think a runner would be nice visually and since it's expensive you would like to appreciate it / show it more. Wood stairs are just dusty no matter what, I've never had runners but all wood stairs and they are just dusty... i don't know that it will be less work, prob same amount of cleaning. Love the carpet, beautiful.

Melissa, when I said footboard, I meant this. It has a portion of the bed that extends beyond the mattress edge. You posted a bed that had something at the foot section of the bed. By platform, I mean a bed that has a hard area and only a mattress on it. Like this. It does not extend beyond the edge of the mattress, but does not have a box spring. It is also lower to the ground. The picture you posted was a high profile bed and box spring. It was not on a typical bed frame. A standard bed frame, used with box spring and mattress looks like this. Virtually invisible and does not extend out beyond the mattress/box spring set. That being said, I'd recommend you get a headboard that is not too big for your space. Neither in height or depth (distance from the wall). I would also not get a mattress frame that extends beyond the size of the mattress. Sorry to have not been clear before.

I'd probably just replace the blue carpet rather than rip everything out straight away. It gives you a chance to live in the house first and see what actually works.

We replaced ours through Urmston Carpets and were surprised by how many options they had. Made it much easier to find something that matched the rest of the house without spending a fortune.
