Renovating house for resale. Carpet colour??

Hi Folks,

We are doing a very basic refurbishment of a house for re-sale showing purposes only. I had originally thought to just beige the entire house for the blank canvas look. Magnolia walls, white skirting and molding and cream carpets upstairs but one or two friends have said that they would find cream carpets off putting because of maintenance perceptions. Is there a rule of thumb for upstairs carpet colour choice for remodeling?

Any advice or opinion much appreciated!

P.S. Am thinking white walls and light grey carpeting or magnolia walls and beige/cream carpeting. The house is a standard med-large 3 bed semi with plenty of sunlight. What do you think?

White walls (also saves edging around the ceiling) bounce lights around and look modern and clean. Grey carpets definitely the way forward as it more contemporary and a bit more plush. Beige carpets are dated now and are a nightmare to keep clean.

Another question for you scooby if you don't mind please?... The existing two stairs (3 story) in the house are varnished almost wallnut. I feel that grey carpets and white walls will be forgiving for the occasional wooden feature and we won't have to repaint/carpet the stairs but not certain. What do you think?

If painting, use low VOC paint. When replacing things, look for low, or non outgassing furnishings. No sharp corners on tables etc. Choose safety features on blinds to eliminate strangling on cords. Non breakable ornaments/bowls down low. Breakables and hot coffees up high. A chest for toys, but sand down sharp corners. A small chair. Any tall furniture should be affixed to wall with brackets. Don't be in a tearing hurry to remove all kitchen walls that can have a baby gate attached to them. Burns by scalding in kitchens kill and maim.

Wood Essence Amber is a great product, comes in just few sizes but also in a non slip tile. The tiles in general could be lay on floor boards, not directly. I would lay first a 9-10 mm plywood otherwise the existing boards might move too much creating cracks in the grout, also use flexible tile adhesive specific for wood, I think MAPEI has the best tile adhesive, but that is because I am Italian, sorry. I know KERAKOLL is getting more and more popular as DUNLOP. Best advise ever, do not go for plywood less than 9mm, please! ( I have been convinced by a client, I will never do it again its not worth it ) You might find some fibre cement boards to use specific for this porpoises, there are quite few types around you just need to ask your closest building merchant.

Hello Houzz Ireland, We are currently renovating a 1960's build - so as you know, there is a lot of decisions to be made!! So it would be nice to get some gems of advice from the experts to help us through this daunting task. Areas where we would really like some inspiration for - small bathroom downstairs. I would really like to do something fun with this room and although small, I think it could work really well with some funky wallpaper or possibly tiles?! I'm just not sure what to do with it. Also - pulling a whole house together?! Where do we start? We have the bigger pieces of furniture but how do I know what nest of tables goes best with a suite? Or what accessories will bring a room together? I'm due a second baby in 2 weeks time so any help at this stage would be so amazing - to guide me on the right interior design path for our new house. I think you are right, I really like polished dark wood with grey and white - very contemporary Australian style. Just make sure that they are non-slip as anyone with kids will worry about this so make sure it is clearly stated in your sales particulars so you don't put anyone off - buyers can be so fussy about this slightest little thing.

If not, you could always go for a runner thereby keeping the polished walnut but also having stair carpet but that seems like an unnecessary expense as you are selling.
