I agree Minnie having the doors the same width is much better for visual cohesion. I really like the open shelves. Could be bookshelves, plants, handbags, whatever you fancy. It's a good solution. You could also paint the inside and the back another colour :)). They look very smart BTW.

i wouldn’t have the shelves painted like that, maybe inlaid with wood or something but as I said I’m not too sure on the shelves, maybe that will be more kitchen like 😂

I also don’t need that many drawers. The interior of the larger wardrobe will be split between a hanging rail for really long stuff and adjustable shelves

I generally like the look of a tall bookcase at the end of a run of wardrobes, but in this case the shelves will be only about 25cm wide (and presumably 60cm deep). It may work for shoes, but I think the proportions will look pinched. It will look much smarter to have the doors adjusted to fill the alcoves. And since you have a chimney inbetween the effect of the different door widths will be subtle, but subtly bespoke.

Alternative door arrangement

I love the wardrobes but I’m not sure about the shelving bit. Could you just not make the side infill panels a little wider either side on the left hand wardrobe so the doors stay the same size? I’m no carpenter, but just a thought and it probably won’t look out of place?

Thanks Sonia. I think I’d rather keep the frames the same size. It would be easier if I could ”pinch” some of the chimney breast but I’m not taking the wardrobes to the ceiling as I think they’d overpower the room. I’ll try and simplify the joiners plan and see how that looks or look at Jonathan’s idea.

Your design makes a lot of sense given the different alcove widths! Keeping the doors uniform will create a much cleaner and more balanced look, so I think that’s a smart choice.

As for the open shelves, it depends on how you plan to use the space. If you want a place for books, decorative items, or even a couple of baskets for extra storage, they can work really well. But if you prefer a seamless, built-in look, you might want to consider either adding a cupboard door over the shelving or using paneling to make them feel more integrated.

Since you’re hoping to reinstate a fireplace, I’d also suggest thinking about how the shelves will visually interact with it. A closed storage section might help keep things feeling more symmetrical and tidy. Alternatively, if you do go for open shelves, styling them with a few carefully chosen pieces (rather than cramming them full) will help keep the space looking elegant.

Overall, it looks like a great plan

Think of it like a kitchen. Three 600 units one side and three 500 units the other. I wouldn't see a problem and think it would be preferable to two 600s and some narrow shelves. Essentially I'm with Johnathan and your carpenter. You are paying for bespoke so get the benefit of bespoke.
