Large sliding door or keep small French door and window
We are having an open plan kitchen diner living area (plus separate living room) and can't work out whether it would be better to remove the French door and dining room window and replace with a 5m sliding door. Or would that be too big and look odd next to the kitchen window on the right? We are also planning to have sliding doors on the end living room on left and bedroom above with Juliet balcony. We'd really appreciate any advice :)

last monthThanks, should have also said, the French door needs changing anyway as it has packing either side and doesn't fit the gap properly. Also, there is no steel above, so that will need adding. We are going to move the meter box to the side of the house as it is not a good location. We thought a sliding door would give everyone at the dining table a view rather than looking at a wall for some, but I'm not sure about how it looks from the outside Is your opinion based on how it looks from the outside?

Comments (26)Hi, you have a lovely home! I read through your thread, and I like Dar Eckarts suggestion above the best. I think because of the symmetry of it as an H shaped house is symmetrical, and it would also keep the space looking decorated but still open and uncluttered which is what an entrance should be. Comments (7)I feel in a situation like this, I would not add windows with no view that would probably end up with some type of coverings a great deal of the time. My situation would be use of mirrors to reflect available light back into room. Mirror could be styled to look like Windows etc. we have a similar situation in our kitchen, and we mirrored over the sink, and created two faux windows using mirror and drapery side pannels. The effect works great, and when you add the right lighting the effect is wonderful, day and night. Comments (15)I think it might work better to have blinds on the wall with the smaller windows (perhaps in a plain colour) and have curtains on the main stretch of windows, using the existing curtains to replace the small roman blinds. This would allow the fantastic view to be the main focus. I do think plain curtains would work well here but you perhaps aren't keen to change them as they are new? Could they be used elsewhere? I also agree re moving the sofas so they aren't at angles, it looks a bit strange. Maybe try them in a u shape around the fire. Just so I can understand and visual where you suggest moving things to, when you say move the fridge down to opposite the pennisula, do you mean near the entry to the kitchen (where the small three cupboards are shown on the drawing above) or where the cooktop is currently? I know one concern that my mum has is that the width of the fridge will jut out too far into the kitchen, taking up too much room. I've attached a picture with dimensions on it. last monthThanks Rinked, that's super helpful. The builder was planning to render just two sides and that was going to be about 10k apparently. Feel like i should be paying for this advice :) Any ideas what to do with the front to tie it in, or do you think keep as is? (note: the two windows to the right are thin slits at the moment for the en-suite, but we're planning on making them proper windows.

last monthPerhaps extend the protruding part of the gutter? A "faux gutter" haha! (but seriously, it does make the rsj disappear, which is quite effective without looking too silly))
The front already has quite a lot of materials going on, the brick is what ties it together.

last monthI rang some lintel companies and there only suggestion was to either change the lintel or render it. Localised rendering may stand out like a sore thumb, but think that is the only solution
