Bungalow difficult floor plan

Im thinking of moving our kitchen to our living room and making an open plan kitchen diner living room (30ftx12ft), turning the exisiting kitchen into a bedroom and having a seperate living room in bed 1. Issues are - would this be too small for an open plan room. 2. I lose a lot of space with the corridor into the newly made bedroom. I wondered about a breezeway(?) extension across the rear? Or maybe this is too wierd? 3 How can I not have the bathroom facing the front door? Maybe a porch?

Which way does your garden face? If it is south I would be tempted to move the kitchen into the dining room instead as it has doors to the garden. You could always steal some space from the living room (for kitchen) if required. I think your main problem is that you are making the living space quite small for a house with 5 bedrooms. I think its 5, the annotation on your plan is tiny. I think I would consider using that courtyard for an extension to give you a much bigger living area. As you already have double doors in the entrance I don't think the bathroom position is such an issue. It's quite subtle. If that is the only bathroom and it appears so then a multi bedroomed house would need another one or an en-suite for balance.

Could you flip the utility and wc into the rear of the garage and move the shower room into the old utility, (and/or bed 4 to give a second bathroom/ensuite). then you could reconfigure the kitchen across the width of the courtyard and then decide how much to extend out into the courtyard?

Thanks for your comments. I think we've decided on wooden flooring throughout the open plan space but it's just what we do in living area. We had wanted carpet to get that warm cosy affect. We are considering under floor heating but I understand that can be expensive. I know we can put a rug down although I'm not sure whether that will have the desired warm and cosy feel. The other option is to fit carpet in a rectangle or circle shape in the living area. Just not sure how that's going to look and how best to join it to the wood so that it looks good. I've not seen open areas with carpet and tiles/wooden flooring...it seems that usually flooring is the same throughout with a rug in the living area. Any suggestions? I attach a plan which shows what it will hopefully look like. The dining table will go near to the patio doors. The sofa will be in an L shape with the back to the kitchen on one side and the other back to the dining area on the other side. Any flooring ideas would be appreciated!

I love colors and most of your plan sounds fun and great but...that paint color looks very purplish and i would say maybe go lighter, more grey tone. Be cautious.

We have similar dilemma here. My husband likes the cream tiles & although I do like the look of them in a kitchen, I also worry about them being / looking cold if they were through the whole house. Plus it would most likely be me cleaning them every day! So it will be wood floors for us.

not alot happening at the moment, its winter! alotta rain, lotta. but i am bedding down to get this over with and maybe in the spring the spirits will rise once more. i hope so. i would love to feel i was doing something to keep my hopes and dreams alive, i dont see what i can do until the spring. when i bring the topic up, especially to those that moved away and came down this neck of the woods, they say they had friends who felt it was too far too and moved back home. i guess thats how i feel, thats what i want and i just want to be a bit more uplifted, i think rain dampens down things a bit!!! santa Ma Margaret!

The utility is on a macerator and its going to be 10k plus to connect it to the main drain. Its really put me off switching the bathroom

that and cutrently it has a non opening window up against a boundary which doesnt feel nice for a main bathroom either.

I agree with Isla - your plan makes this house bedroom room heavy and unless you need tgat many consider having more living space. And the courtyard is the perfect place for an orangery. Given this is a bungalow any non opening windows in the wc could be improved with a velux above.

we thought shunt the utility into the garage as it has room and then keep that little room as a study or dressing room or bedroom. what would you do about plumbing for the bathroom in the middle? Its prob just me but bathrooms not on a external wall freak me out a bit!

Primary obj is prob to have the eating area next to the kitchen rather than tramping theough whole house with plates etc. im not worried about bathroom window overlooking garden at all. Its more coming out of the shower in a towel and facing anyone whos just come to the door, postman etc.

Yes, one bedroom less, though if 4 is a must, the front lounge could be kept a bedroom as is (i moved the wall to enlarge it) and a narrower table and regular chairs (the ones in my scetch are rather large) the dining would fit in the kitchen and the lounge can easily go near the fireplace.

I understood from OP that they want to use the front room as lounge, so i assumed 3 bedrooms is enough.

@Piur & Co interior design I really like the fact that that kitchen window wilhich is currently the bathroom brings in a lot of light so to be able to bring light into the darkest part of the room is brilliant.

we are a family of four - (two teenagers) and also a set of grandparents that come for meals. i like minamilist traditional style, brass taps, belfast sink, tongue and groove, devol style, muted colours, I was looking for a cheaper ikea kitchen maybe with better doors but with a nice range cooker and fridge.

I've made a sketch putting all the bedrooms in one area, and all kitchen living room behind the garage. 2 bathrooms ( blue boxes) one being ensuite for the smallest bedroom 4, the other having a large storage area beside it. Bedroom 1 for the adults. Build in storage to bedroom 2 and 3 for the teens and they can share ensuing if grandparents don't live in.
