Open Plan Kitchen/Living Room

Don't have any picture of what we are trying to do but I'll describe it as best I can.

We have an open plan kitchen/living room separated by an arch. The living room floor is a total mess and would take a serious amount of work to sort it out. A builder fried suggested creating a step up 3-4 inches to save having to dig out the floor.

Any opinions on this?

Also would you then still go with the same floor design the whole way through? Or go with two different styles.

Also husband was thinking of using a beam type piece of timber for the step, anyone done or seen anything like this?

To save money do a step but make the step wider so no tripping,that is always the complaint ,and maybe som step lights a s well,and do same flooring so it looks larger

With a step up your ceiling will be lower. That is ok if you are starting with a high ceiling.

hi there looking for advice for new kitchen floor 70s bungalow refurb - large open plan kitchen / living room - house is built on concrete slab and architect has included lots of large windows as kitchen end is south / southwest facing. read that dark colour in either polished concrete or natural stone carpet would gain most thermal mass gain energy wise (other than dark tiles which we want to stay away from) any thoughts advice would be appreciated! thanks

Consider the routes you're most likely to take. Consider the likely locations of furniture. Find out exactly how much it would cost to do the work necessary to "sort the floor out" in a way that it would be level. Split level rooms can work really well. They can add a lot of drama and interest. However, they can be difficult to access for very young or older people and those with mobility difficulties and unless they are considered carefully can provide a trip hazard for anyone. Also you need to have at least 2 steps unless its a clearly defined location such as a doorway.

Thanks for your comments. I think we've decided on wooden flooring throughout the open plan space but it's just what we do in living area. We had wanted carpet to get that warm cosy affect. We are considering under floor heating but I understand that can be expensive. I know we can put a rug down although I'm not sure whether that will have the desired warm and cosy feel. The other option is to fit carpet in a rectangle or circle shape in the living area. Just not sure how that's going to look and how best to join it to the wood so that it looks good. I've not seen open areas with carpet and tiles/wooden flooring...it seems that usually flooring is the same throughout with a rug in the living area.

Any suggestions?

I attach a plan which shows what it will hopefully look like. The dining table will go near to the patio doors. The sofa will be in an L shape with the back to the kitchen on one side and the other back to the dining area on the other side. Any flooring ideas would be appreciated!
