we are currently getting quotes for a knock through for our home, knock through kitchen and dining room and adjoining WC and side hallway to make a big open plan space. would need four walls knocking down. the supporting wall we were keeping up.


We instructed a structural engineer (SE) first and he provided us with calculations for one steel, front to back. There is already an existing steel going through kitchen and dining room side to side.


We have got two contractors round to quote for the works so far and both had a lot of questions from the SE calculations so we had to go back. both contractors were confused as only recieved calcs with no design or guidance on how the SE thought it should be done or any further information. we went back to the SE asking the questions with which we got short non-direct answers back and even then not answering all the questions in our email. when he originally came round no measurements or investigations for existing steel were done. one of the contractors knocked holes and we did in the end to reveal some existing steel and expanse. it seemed everything from the SE was assumed. anyway, turns out the existing steel (side to side) comes up short of the outside wall (sits on the toilet wall) so turns out we will probably need not just one steel but some support where the existing steel stops if we are knocking down all walls which we instructed the SE to do calcs for. Again his emails are assumptions with no investigations. We are waiting for an answer from him after we discovered the existing steel didn't span the entire width of the house.


Basically is this normal of an SE? not providing more support/advice and not inspecting the existing steels and supports of the house to provide a calculation?


we have only had one quote so far which is about £15k more than we budgeted for, i was surprised as general concensus was that our budget seemed fine for what we wanted to do. one builder asked us to get calcs for just a steel post rather than a steel as it would be really complicated as the existing steel would need cutting and would cost £10k to put the steel up versus £4k for the post.
