I think its visually better if the frame matches the skirting. You could try it and see how it looks. The issue with what you are proposing will really emphasize the skirting although it depends on what colour you are painting the walls.If the walls are light it might look good. If your walls are going to be a dark colour I would advise against it. Is the door staying a natural colour?
The walls are going to be painted a very pale cream, the skirting is all being replaced , I don't particularly like painted skirting, hence thinking light oak,but the door frame is already painted wood, which will need repainting the same colour as the walls, as well as the door .
