kitchen floor - matt or gloss

Hi, currently in the process of getting the kitchen done but really unsure about what tiles too choose for the floors. There will be underfloor heating installed beforehand. I’ve been told that we shouldnt use gloss tiles in the kitchen as it can be slippery etc? What you guys recommend? Any pros or cons to either matt or gloss tiles? Also is it better to get bigger tiles to make the space look bigger? Thank you in advance

I would never recommend or have gloss. Bigger tiles looks much neater and if you go for porcelain (the best choice) make sure they are rectified or you will have horrible huge lines of grout destroying the neat appearance. I think gloss always looks cheap and is an absolute nightmare to keep clean. Your choice. Minimise the grout and you will have an easy floor to clean and it will keep looking good for many years.

Don't have glossy tiles. Even though they bounce the light around, they also show every mark and are very hard to keep strwak free when cleaning. Totally agree with the above comment.

We are thinking maybe a terazzo tile of some sort- one that integrates the red, black and white, and beige (from the wood floors adjacent). This could pull it all together, for one cohesive room! See images.

Hi catbox/emerald18 - your kitchen is absolutely stunning - I love it - mostly because your style is the same as mine - only the tiles I've chosen are Henley Cool from Topps Tiles (sage green/blue). I've also had a few moments of indecision but I've had a picture and sample of the tiles pinned up for months and I still love them. I'd chosen matt slab style kitchen door fronts but I might be convinced by your photo to change to Shaker. I am also going for the wood worktop but can't decide whether to have a Belfast sink or not. What sink did you choose? I also can't decide on a splashback, but like white painted brick + something more cleanable by the sink and hob. Once again, I love love love your kitchen - I'm pinning the photo of it up with my tiles picture in case I get future wobbles about my dream kitchen

First before you think of putting grey on your walls take into account the light in your kitchen. Where do you live? Is it sunny most of the year? Is your sky grey 4 to 6 months of the year in the winter and spring? Grey can be very depressing when you are surrounded by it day after day. My vote is for white walls or a light color. You also have to take into account what the other rooms are painted that are open to the kitchen's sight line.

Lovely, much better than the 3D plan. V glad you kept your patterned floor tiles, I really like them. It's all come together very attractively. The only thing I'd change and this is just because I'm a colour freak is the pendants - I'd probably have made those red and orange or something. But congrats really, it looks great.

Gloss tiles are a nightmare to keep clean and glossy. Stick to matt.

My brother regrets his glossy floor tiles as they are a nightmare to keep clean. I have Matt porcelain tiles and they are so easy to clean. The tiles are textured as they mimic a slate floor but I love them.

You’ll be constantly cleaning gloss tiles because they show all the smear marks and water marks. Go with matt ones.

Hi Remziye,

How exciting! We have used both matt and gloss successfully in kitchen designs, it is worth noting the pros and cons for these types of finishes below.

Matt:

Pros

· Natural ambience

· Texture

Cons:

· Stains stubborn to remove

· Can appear dull depending on the colour

Gloss:

Pros:

· Makes spaces appear larger

· Easy to clean

Cons:

· Reflective surface appear too bright

· Slippery

Grout: Grout has advanced significantly they can match the exact colour of grout to the tiles, to create a subtle flow to the tiles rather than a stark contrast of an opposing grout colour, they can also match the grout the veining in the tiles to create the same effect.

Functionality: The kitchen is usually a place with the largest traffic flow within a home and the tile options need to reflect the function of your space.

SPEAK Project: We recently completed a project which reflected the needs of a couple with opposing tastes in tile finishes. The solution we opted for was a matt within the kitchen space and a high gloss mixed into this tile and flowing through into the two other rooms which branched off from the kitchen, the result was stunning. Similar to the attached photo.

Choose matt. From experience of having black gloss kitchen floor tiles, don’t do it! Absolute nightmare to clean, keep clean and extremely high maintenance - they show every mark, smear and speck of dust - even walking across the floor in (clean) socks was enough to mark it. I was glad to move house to get rid of them!

Like earlier recommendations, go for large format rectified Matt tiles.
