Living Rooms Design Dilemma Home Decorating

HELP!! oddly laid out living room

I have an oddly laid out 16x24 living room that has a stairway, front door, door to a kitchen and French doors to another living room that used to be a dining room (dining room is connect to kitchen in the back now) with there being little to no wall space I’ve resorted to putting a love seat and two chairs by the fireplace. But it feels very tight and I hate that there’s wasted space near the stairway. I would love the whole room to be cohesive, but I’m not sure if that’s possible. I’m kind of stumped on what to do, so If anyone has any ideas, I’d greatly appreciate it!

Play around with your furniture. If you place the sofa facing the larger fireplace then you could have a console or storage behind it. This would spread things out a bit. Think about how you use the room. You may need a second sofa or a casual table with chairs. Do you use it as a dining room? I think a much larger sofa would better suit the room. Its usually better to divide it visually into zones. A tv watching zone, fireplace zone, reading zone etc.

Yellows/creams/ whites/ and grays are very fresh right now. The gray can range from light silver to charcoal, but it won't take away from bright and airy feel, because it really makes the yellows and creams stand out.

Latest update! Made a few changes to the book cabinet to the left of the fireplace. Added chrome legs to match the legs on the tv cabinet and added doors to the top half to try to make it look less cluttered. The lighting in the photos isn't great but hopefully you get the idea.Am quite pleased with the result. Am still trying to decide on art for over the fireplace, keep changing my mind but considering getting this canvas (see picture).

Wow, I didn't expect so many responses, thank you so much for your time and ideas. I do know that the art is wrong but had to put something up from our last house while we settle in. I do find the fireplace a bit un-friendly and so I would consider changing the colour of it even just the border of it like one of the photos shows. I'm not keen on the small computer cabinet or the ladder shelving I have to admit. I was thinking more of putting 3 full width cherry wood shelves, bottom one being wider and desk height, changing the light fittings to down lights and maybe having a wallpaper or painted backdrop behind the shelves?? I realise I would have to get rid of or change the wallpaper on the other wall and change the curtains too. I take your point, many of you said it, about the curtains needing to fall straight, but I will need a wider pole to do that. Again many thanks, AnnaMarie ps we are in Ireland now but lived in australia for many years and that picture over the mantle is of an old aussie shed with moon light on it.

Hi Grace,

It would be useful to know more about what you want to use the room for? Then create the zones from here in the gaps you have between doors while leaving your path between spaces.

There also seem to be a lot of doors, are all of these essential? It looks like from the third photo two doors may get you to very similar spaces? Maybe you could also mark out the paths that people normally use to get across the room? Its harder to think of zones and furniture placements without knowing how you normally get around the space. I hope that makes sense!
