Pros/cons for brick looking splashback/tile in kitchen

Hello! We are considering putting a brick-looking splashback/tiles in the kitchen, but are worried the grout will get dirty and be a pain to clean especially behind the hob.

We would appreciate your input/experience with:

Do you know of any brick-looking splashback where this wouldn’t be an issue?
Is there any workaround for this? I can think of putting a glass just behind the hob in front of the ‘brick’, but not sure how that would look.
Have you done it and have any lessons learned?

What material were you thinking of using as you say "brick looking"? Real bricks are porous and uneven not great for a splashback or keeping it clean.

Because brick is uneven it’s difficult to clean. Covering it with glass is a good option but you sound like you are adding it in as a decorative feature- does this feature have to go here or can it go somewhere it won’t get splashed?

I have to join this discussion of Hardwood in the kitchen. I am a little biased in this discussion because of being a tile contractor for almost 30 years. I have seen alot of hardwood kitchen floors. I have to give you the cons of putting hardwood in. Hardwood floors look great. As far as durability I am not sold. Hardwood floors look great when they are first put in. Depending on the traffic in the kitchen I give them about 4 to 5 years is when you see significant wear. I have seen alot of hardwood floors in kitchens with water damage. Now I know you think you wont have a leak from your dishwasher, refrigerator or a general plumbing leak. Well these things do happen and when it does the hardwood needs to be totally removed. Some times this is not so easy if the hardwood goes under the base cabinets. I am not saying do not put hardwood in the kitchen I think you should look at whats going to work for you. There are plenty of porcelain tiles that will give you the look of hardwood but give you the durability of a porcelain tile. Tile installed properly will last a long time. Hardwood will last but it will look warn to the point that it would need to be refinished at a cost around $2000.00 depending on the size of the room. I don't want to upset the hardwood floor lovers I have it all over my house except the bathrooms and kitchen. The floor is 20 years old 4 kids 2 dogs and still looks great. I am sure what ever you choose it will look great.

I agree, I think the kitchen units are quite charming. The tiles date it, the top of the dresser and the piece over the window. Agree, would paint the ceiling a soft chalky white. I know they're becoming a little overdone but metro tiles would suit but handmade ones in a soft white unless you just remove the tiles altogether and have a splashback by the oven. Can you afford to update the floor? The dresser offers good storage space, have you considered either just removing the top half or updating the top so changing the architrave and glass panes? The fire itself looks lovely, do you need the heater in front? I also like the brick but the recesses are dating it. I definitely wouldn't paint the brick, if you were to do anything I think it would need plastering over to cover the niches unless you are able to match the brick. Do you have a better pic of the firep? If you are set on painting the kitchen units, I would look at the really dark greys and inky Blues for the base units, as I think they'd suit the style well, with brass cup handles with a very pale grey for ŵall units. Or if you want the same colour units, look at a mid tone grey.

I think it looks great so far. Many of the ads for claw foot tubs, and magazines, show them with encaustic/cement tile and plain white surround. Also, you did something creative and attractive with the tile layout. I love the nickel shine of your clawfoot legs too. If you can maybe get a corner shelf on one side of the wall, you'll have a place for soap, candle or bubble bath. And maybe hotel towel holder on another wall to get the height up. I agree with Jonathan. I would put the glass just behind the cooker & seal the brickwork. Thus keeping the brickwork look.

I have glass mosaic tiles behind my cooker and there’s a lot of grout but not difficult to clean as some may imagine. However it sounds like the brick look could well be difficult to clean rather than the grout?

Many thanks everyone. We are still working through this decision (amongst many others that come along with the work we are doing at home). We've seen some brick looking materials (can't remember the names) but they seem easier to clean. Also we've not discarded the option of using glass or not using 'bricks' at all, and your input has helped!
