Hello all. We are thinking of the best way to extend our home to allow us more space but are unable to afford the sort of extension we would like just yet. I’m thinking about an orangery however wondering about usability in the winter months. I know getting underfloor heating could be helpful but I wonder does it help keep warm enough or shall we just go brick and mortar <3m permissible extension? Thanks all.
My sister has a lean to type conservatory tacked onto the back of her house. Not as posh as an orangery! It is pretty well insulated and never feels cold in there. She had it added to create a play area for her new baby but it has turned into a gaming room for her husbands addiction.
Which side of your house would it face? If it is South it is a common problem for it to be too cold in winter and too hot in summer. Underfloor heating is great in garden rooms I'm not sure about orangeries. When we built our kitchen extension we had underfloor heating with a gas boiler and it was really warm in winter. It was exceptionally well insulated though.
In any case, you need to provide good thermal insulation so that the heat does not go away. That is, not every greenhouse glazing is suitable. But anything is possible, especially if you combine a greenhouse.
