How to make the corridor less white..

The space here is very 'white'..I've been looking up painting it but that might be too dark and the options of painting one accent wall in a hallway might make it look a bit odd with just one wall painted. Painting half a wall feels too difficult to make it look right. Was wondering about just painting the door frames and skirting board. I'm definitely thinking of adding mdf 'bead board' to the white cupboards to make them look more interesting. And I really like the look of acupanel, perhaps halfway up the wall under the underground pictures, but that is fairly pricey so maybe not yet. Also unsure if that will damage the wall, and this is a leasehold flat so don't want to do anything that might cause issues . Lastly thought about painting or adding faux panelling to the wooden doors but some people online seem to think that looks naf..

Personally I think there are several reasons you don’t like this space.

I think you should firstly change a few light bulbs- in a windowless space the quality of electric light can really change how you feel about it.

Next add pattern with accessories- firstly a rug, a big picture and a mirror and houseplant.

Wall panelling feels a bit traditional in this contemporary interior but I suspect a wallpaper or a different wall colour will make you feel different about it. I would leave the woodwork white and make the walls a mid neutral colour so that there is less contrast with the darker doors. I like ammonite or Purbeck stone from Farrow and Vall

Ok let me look those colours up! Thanks, yeah exactly the white and dark are too big a contrast. I'll think about bigger wall art though I do like the underground pics..maybe bigger ones. A rug I'm worrying will keep moving around and if you stick it down might leave sticky marks on the floor. I do have softer lamps for the evening, but maybe I'll look into dimmable spotlights too. Thanks so much, really helpful to get opinions.

Hi Janis Unfortunately I am not in the Boston area - I live in Ireland! Yes there are red items in 3 of the main rooms, the kitchen, sitting room and tv room (library) - although we have pared those back now and it's not as overwhelming. thanks for all your help everyone, i really feel like it's made a big difference and am excited to finish the tv room and then refresh the play room. do you think I should move the piano to the sitting room? and would the jazz painting work in the tv room? speak later, thanks!

Lots of ideas....couldn't resist adding my two cents. i copied your photos and did a little cut and paste- it's messy, but hopefully gets the main idea across. i'd put your sofa in front of the large book case, chair by the fireplace, tv on the stand on the wall opposite the fireplace - so you can either look at the fire or the tv. Someone suggested using frames of one color for your photos - an inexpensive way to do that would be to spray paint them all a dark color-black goes with everything. Since your shelves are a medium tone wood, display things that are dark or light so that they contrast against the wood. Limiting your display items pallette to a few values usually helps to unify things. (I think that's why so many people want to paint the shelves or put inserts in the back to help your nice things read more clearly...some get lost). If you want to "splurge" -you may consider having a carpenter make a few solid tall cabinet doors to provide a visual break in the shelving. I'm showing 3 doors - 1 on the right side of the fireplace and 2 on the left to leave two open vertical shelves for display on each side - with things arranged to frame the fireplace as the focal point. To add some height to your big vases, consider stacking some books beneath them. Enjoy experimenting untill you get something you're happy with - good luck!

Latest update! Made a few changes to the book cabinet to the left of the fireplace. Added chrome legs to match the legs on the tv cabinet and added doors to the top half to try to make it look less cluttered. The lighting in the photos isn't great but hopefully you get the idea.Am quite pleased with the result. Am still trying to decide on art for over the fireplace, keep changing my mind but considering getting this canvas (see picture).

Hi, I have the same problem in my hallway. If your budget is tight, just replacing the ceiling light with something like a starburst pendant with at least 6 bulbs would instantly improve the space. Also I would hang some bold and bright artwork on the walls and put a runner on the floor. Mirrors are also great for your space. I'm attaching a photo example. See how the eye is instantly drawn to the bold door? Also if you can repaint the wall, I would recommend you to use glossy finish paint so the light can bounce off the walls too.
