Is there a purpose to this gap in the wall?

Hi! 👋

We’re due to complete on our next project house (despite us swearing we’d never do it again after the last!). I’m just looking through the rightmove images again and dreaming of what we’re going to do with it, when we can eventually afford to!

Anyway, I was wondering about this door shaped gap in the wall here. It is opposite the door to the front room in a Victorian terrace house. Is it there just to mirror the other door? I assume it wasn’t originally there to house the cupboard that’s currently sat in it? I don’t believe it was ever a door because that would just lead into next doors house. Just curious I guess.

I would think that this was done for symmetry to echo the other door and make the house look grander like there was another side to the house.

it's called Art Niche, it used for hanging painting or artwork. If you want to searh inspiration what to do with it you can browse "painting wall recess" keyword as Niche itself are rarely used term

I think you are right, I really like polished dark wood with grey and white - very contemporary Australian style. Just make sure that they are non-slip as anyone with kids will worry about this so make sure it is clearly stated in your sales particulars so you don't put anyone off - buyers can be so fussy about this slightest little thing. If not, you could always go for a runner thereby keeping the polished walnut but also having stair carpet but that seems like an unnecessary expense as you are selling. Good luck :-)

A15) @Dara Cooke: If you can't afford a quartz or granite worktop from day one then I would recommend using a laminate worktop as a temporary solution. If you don't put tiles up as a backsplash then replacing the worktops can be relatively easy in a couple of years.

Hi Helen, The fridge position is ideal so I suggest you move the radiator to the other side of the door and turn the door so its opens back against the fridge. This will increase the feeling of space in the whole dining area. You won't regret the length of your breakfast bar so I wouldn't worry about the gap sizes, 1200 is an ideal but 1000 is more than sufficient. Could you turn the door into the utility so that it opens inwards and not into the kitchen area? It would eliminate having to manoeuvre round the door when open and reduce congestion in the kitchen especially with traffic flow past the end of the breakfast bar. Alternatively you could consider a pocket door which slides into the wall if there is enough space. Good luck!

You could leave the piano where it is and mount the TV screen above it. (See MANY Houzz posts about how to determine the best height for a TV.) Build a shelf or cabinet from the piano area to the alcove to keep cords and accessories for your electronics hidden. A charging station in the alcove area would keep things from getting knocked down. Maybe credenza-type cabinets to the height of the piano. A combination of shelving and cabinets above the credenza will be determined by what you will store low and what you will store higher up.

I bet this house used to be joined to the one next door. When you get the deeds you can look back to previous owners and see if it used to be a hotel or guest house

I love the idea of it being a secret door somewhere but I think it’s much more likely it’s something a bit more normal like mirroring a door way or an art niche! Thanks for the replies. Going to google art niches now!
