Help! is our kitchen mantle too big for the room?!

We have just spent a lot of money on our new kitchen. We are quite concerned that the mantle is just way too big for the room. It can’t be lowered as it has a large shelf that would you hit your head on it was any lower.
Overall the kitchen is beautiful, but I feel they should have designed a mantle more suited to the room.
What do you think?!

Comments (15)We just painted a color called "Latte" over the dark red walls in our place and we keep thinking that someone left the light on! It adds that much light to the place as the red was just sucking out any light in the place. Find a color you like more for that wall and repaint...and/or maybe add a ceramic tile backsplash? Comments (1)Thank you for commenting. I was hoping to place double doors /pocket doors between the kitchen and living room that I could open or close off particularly in the depths of winter. I like my heat. Doing that leaves me with less wall space for kitchen units particularly the American style fridge freezer but something has to give. The back wall of the house opens/or rather doesn't open to the garden at the moment but I would like it to do so. So nothing unusual here, I just want a kitchen /diner / utility that opens onto the garden for outside entertainment, but I think my main struggle is with the length and narrowness of the room. Comments (20)Kitchen cabinets will look fantastic painted. The thing to consider when thinking about worktops is the work black granite creates - they show every little watermark, so need a lot of polishing. I discovered this when doing lots of experiments on granite samples! Other thing to bear in mind is granite is porous, so you have to be careful about staining the lighter coloured worktops and granite requires resealing after a few years. Because I'm quite lazy and didn't want any maintenance, plus we are a messy family, I went with Compac Quartz in white mirror, it's practically bomb proof and I haven't managed to stain it yet (3 years on). Comments (2)Hello Jane, Well I would look at it this way. Are you an avid user of the kitchen, do you intend to have a dining area within. Is entertaining a big part of your life. Or does the house suggest an open plan arrangement.. If there is a large living room and all the rooms are sizeable then it would suggest that you use the space accordingly.. However if you have to knock walls through in order to extend the floor area to gain a large kitchen then that's slightly different as you may well be losing in other respects. Perhaps it might be a good idea to look at the square footage of the floor in question and what you need out of it. If the ratio of kitchen vs living room is disproportionate in favour of kitchen then I would personally want a larger living area.. It is entirely possible to have dining in living and separate kitchen.. So work out where you want to do the eating.. If there are not separate rooms for each, as this may help you to decide..
