Portland Stone for hallway

Hi, I have a long L shaped hall with the lower part of the L bright but the rest is dark. I am panelling the lower half & I would like to use Portland stone on this. I would like your suggestions for a colour on the top of the panelling that would look rich but not too dark. I have spotlights in the ceiling so gives lovely light to the hall when lighting. Also oak floorboards. Thank you.

A niche would be a good way to add some drama without infringing on your circulation space. It doesn't have to be deep to be effective. You can do one simple vertical rectangle, and line the back with a mirror, or add some colour with paint, wallcovering or wood. It would be great if you could also add a recessed light fixture at the top. The attached images are perhaps too busy for your situation, but it gives you a good idea of what can be done. Good luck!

Hi, I would incline to tiling the whole space in one material. Now, with that you have lots of options in terms of material choices. If you have underfloor heating I would recommend to go for porcelain tiles - they come in wide range of colours, patterns, stone and wood imitations. Marble and wood imitating tiles are very popular and timeless such as calacatta white marble, creme marfil marble, granite, slate. Wood porcelain tiles range from blonde tones, light, dark browns to almost black, zebrano. Porcelain tiles technology has evolved so much over the last decade that an untrained eye can not distinguish the porcelain from the real thing. And if you have children it's so much more practical as well. Easy to clean and maintain. However, if you don't have the option of underfloor heating I would recommend wooden flooring. Again throughout. I wouldn't break the flow with different flooring types. If you have your living room in that open plan as well, I wouldn't worry too much about changing the flooring type just because of it. You can always use large rugs to define the area and function of that space, and make it more cosy. I just completed a project with porcelain tiles throughout. You can have a look at my profile. Dee, I think 2manycats has nailed it for you. Rather than thinking of this as a window, think of it as a backlit (in the daytime), rectangular frame! The large, stained glass is a great option! Even though it's physically hard and cold, the design/colors can provide the warm, welcoming feature you desire for your entry area. It will be fun to see what you come up with!

Paint the doors black matt and the fames cream add silver crome door furniture. Huge silver mirror above the covered radiator then add a runner of any colour you like and match it with the lamps and lighting. hey presto done.
