Any suggestions about an alternative to webbing for this chair?

Hi,

This 1960s beech rocking chair needs a rethink. I have replaced the pirelli webbing twice in the last year and it is clearly not a sustainable option for this chair. None of us are particularly heavy and I even put a piece of sturdy cardboard under the cushion to distribute the weight more evenly, but still the clips have ripped through the webbing where it is attached at the back. A solid seat would be more practical, but I cannot see how to fix such a thing. Any ideas?

A thin piece of MDF Could you ledge it to overlap what you already have there because the cushion will cover the edges

I can't see how the back clips are held in place. They are straight and they should be turned like the front ones. That's why they are not holding.
Or …could be pulled too tight or loose??

The trim in your rooms is outstanding. To "tie the rooms together", the one thing I would do is install chair rail the same color as the existing trim. The horizontal lines of chair rail will move the eye around the room and into the next room creating a flow. Chair rail is relatively inexpensive, easy to install and would be wonderful compliment to your existing beautiful trim.

Thanks guys, in my own head I was thinking mismatched chairs, maybe painted in a neutral shabby chic kind of way, but I'm really impressed with both the ghost chair and the tobias as it makes it all about the table but definitely puts a modern twist on it. Any other photos out there of the ghost or tobias in situ?

Hi snan - to address your questions: 1 - yes, the lamps work very well. With regard to the height of the larger lamps: do you know how high they would be? If the bottom of the lampshade is even with the top of the pillows that should work. If they are taller than that I think you will be okay with the smaller lamps. Look back again at some of the pictures above to see what I mean. The thing that will look odd would be if the top of the lamps were taller than your headboard. The idea is that when you are in bed reading a book that you want the light to be able to reflect down. As far as the lampshade size goes on the smaller lamps I'm thinking the shorter ones since they don't seem to drop down as far as the larger ones. 2 & 3-Definitely chair by the mirrored bedside locker with one white locker on the other side. Without question. The chair to the left of the bed gave the room life. Use the extra white one in a closet or another room. You don't want to overcrowd your room when you are going for a tranquil setting. 4-Absolutely okay to have bedside tables that don't match and look good in the room. Whether or not you like that is a personal preference though. I would only put the mirrored one next to the bed though if you have the chair next to it. It's how they play off each other that makes it work. If you don't keep the chair next to the bed then I would use both white tables beside the bed. It is also fine that the pictures are off-centre to the wall as long as they are centered to the bed. :)

It needs another rail fitted along the back to create a gap so that the clips can turn like the front.

Thanks for your comment. the back clips are pushed into a groove in the back rail and then nailed from underneath. A design flaw! Adding a rail (or a thin sheet as suggested by Daisy England) is tricky because the back rail is higher than the front and very visible from the side. i will experiment a bit.
