Flooring Design Dilemma Kitchens

Ideas for flooring please

I have a large kitchen in very good condition so I am going to have the units painted. I’ve got the exact colour match of new (IKEA) units I added last year. The blue/green colour in the photo.

The floor as you can see is tiled. It is cracked and I dislike the amount of grout lines.

I was hoping to have very large square (600 X 600) white polished floor tiles laid. However the highly recommended company have advised against a tiled floor as the original floor would need to be taken up.

I’ve investigated other options, but I dislike those suggested (amtico etc).

I’ve lived here since it was built, 26+ years ago. It’s not a good time to sell, even though it is a high spec build in the best road.

I don’t expect to live here more than another 5 years max. I’m going to have all surfaces, walls, doors, ceilings and wardrobes repainted, new door handles etc and I want the finish to be elegant and chic. I had a new wooden floor fitted throughout last year - it’s a huge flat.

I’m aware of microcement but I’m expecting that to be very expensive, plus I don’t think the finish is going to be what I’m looking for.

If I was planning to remain here I’d bite the bullet and go for the gloss tiles.

Any ideas?

Well I had my previous ceramic floor removed as it was cracked in places. So I had tiles removed, floor boarded throughout wall to wall, and new porcelain tiles throughout. If my builder could do it then I’m surprised yours won’t. Perhaps you need a builder to remove the tiles, board it if necessary, and then get the tilers to lay new ones? It can be done.

Would it be possible to apply a levelling compound over existing tiles to give you a flat base for new flooring?

I agree deepen the color, don't change it and yes art art art! maybe lessen the presence of the brick with the earlier suggestion of the metal cogs its and use traditional artwork pics/nature/paintings on the painted wall. I also like the idea to paint the part of the wall that juts out in a darker shade of the same color. Now you have lots to consider and lots to dismiss as well. Good luck and have fun

Hi there, We've recently refloored and painted our living room. I think it's very bland and want to introduce more colour, perhaps a deep teal on the fireplace wall or something. Im struggling with choosing units for the alcove. I hate the TV stand and was thinking of something built in, put the TV higher and mounted on the wall but I cant put one on the other side or I'll have nowhere for my Christmas tree or baby's chair, will it look odd with something on one side only? Any suggestions for wall hangings and rug or no rug! Thanks in advance!

Hi all We have recently begun renovations on an old cottage that had been extended a couple of times by previous owners. The house had two large chimney breasts that have been removed. One of these was between the kitchen/ living room, opening up this space and then the other chimney was between two bedrooms. As part of the chimney removal in the bedrooms we were thinking of moving the remaining dividing wall back making the front bedroom larger as gets better light and then the middle bedroom would be more tv snug/ office/ guest room. Any thoughts on this or the plans in general, just seeing if it is the best layout before we go too far. Thanks

I say have your existing floor removed…… it’s not as big a job as you are imagining. Then add whatever floor you like- personally I think the room could take 900x900 tiles

If the existing tiles are cracked, it would suggest that unless the cracks were cuased by things being dropped, then the subfloor that they are fitted to is a little unstable. If the subfloor is a little unstable, this is why it is not recommended to fit product over the existing tiles.
